Legendary Batsman and Captain Leaves Behind a Rich Legacy

Dattajirao Gaekwad, India, Crickety I Born: 27 October 1928, Vadodara I Died: 13 February 2024 I Age: 95

India’s cricketing community is mourning the loss of one of its most respected figures, Dattajirao Gaekwad. The former Test cricketer and captain passed away peacefully at his residence in Vadodara, Gujarat, on Tuesday, February 13, 2024, at the age of 95.

A Life Dedicated to Cricket

Gaekwad’s cricketing journey began in 1948 when he made his Ranji debut for Bombay University.

  • A right-handed batsman, he played 11 Test matches for India between 1952 and 1961, sharing the field with legends like Vijay Hazare and Polly Umrigar.

Notably, he captained the Indian team during their 1959 tour of England.

More Than Just a Cricketer

Beyond his achievements on the field, Gaekwad was a revered figure in cricket circles. He served as the first captain of the MS University’s cricket team and coached the Baroda Ranji team until 2000.

His dedication to the sport extended beyond playing, as he also held administrative positions like joint secretary of the Baroda Cricket Association.

A Legacy of Inspiration

Gaekwad’s spirit of leadership and contribution to Indian cricket continues to inspire generations of players. His passing leaves a void in the cricketing world, but his legacy as a dedicated sportsman and mentor will surely endure.

India’s cricketing fraternity is enveloped in grief following the passing of its beloved veteran, Dattajirao Gaekwad.

The legendary cricketer and captain breathed his last at his Vadodara residence on February 13, 2024, at the age of 95.

Gaekwad’s life epitomized unwavering dedication to the sport, leaving behind a rich tapestry of achievements and inspiring countless aspiring players.

A Consummate Cricketer

Gaekwad’s cricketing journey began in 1948 when he debuted for Bombay University in the Ranji Trophy. A technically sound right-handed batsman, he rose through the ranks, earning his Test cap in 1952 against Pakistan.

He went on to play 11 Tests for India, sharing the dressing room with iconic figures like Vijay Hazare and Polly Umrigar. Gaekwad’s leadership qualities shone through when he captained the Indian team on their 1959 tour of England, etching his name in cricketing history.

Beyond the Playing Field

Gaekwad’s contribution to Indian cricket transcended his playing career. He served as the first captain of the MS University’s cricket team, fostering young talent.

  • His passion for coaching led him to guide the Baroda Ranji team for an impressive two decades, nurturing future stars.

Gaekwad’s administrative acumen was evident in his role as joint secretary of the Baroda Cricket Association, further solidifying his commitment to the sport’s development.

A Legacy That Endures

Gaekwad’s achievements were not limited to the cricket field.

  • Padma Shri: He was awarded the prestigious Padma Shri in 2019 for his exceptional contribution to Indian sports.

But beyond accolades, Gaekwad’s true legacy lies in the countless lives he touched.

His son, Anshuman Gaekwad, a former Indian cricket coach, carries forward his father’s legacy, a testament to the impact he had on generations of cricketers.

A Guiding Light Extinguished

Dattajirao Gaekwad’s passing leaves a void in the Indian cricketing landscape. He was more than just a player; he was a mentor, an administrator, and a guiding light for aspiring cricketers.

  • His dedication, sportsmanship, and leadership qualities will continue to inspire generations to come.

As the cricketing world bids farewell to this legend, his memory will forever be etched in the annals of Indian sporting history.
