Microsoft Under Satya Nadella Aims to Skill 2 Million Indians in AI by 2025

Microsoft's ADVANTA(I)GE INDIA initiative is a monumental step towards preparing India for the AI-driven future. By aiming to skill 2 million Indians by 2025, Microsoft is not just addressing the current skills gap but is also laying the groundwork for inclusive growth and innovation across the nation.

Satya Nadella Announces ADVANTA(I)GE INDIA Initiative During His Visit

In a groundbreaking move to bridge the skill gap in artificial intelligence (AI) within India, Microsoft has announced its ambitious plan to train 2 million individuals by 2025. The initiative, named ADVANTA(I)GE INDIA, falls under Microsoft’s global ‘Skills for Jobs’ program, aiming to equip India’s workforce with the capabilities needed to thrive in the burgeoning era of AI.

During his visit to India, Microsoft’s Chairman and CEO, Satya Nadella, underscored the company’s commitment to accelerating India’s AI transformation. This skilling initiative is not just about enhancing technical proficiencies; it’s aligned with Microsoft’s responsible AI principles, ensuring that the training is delivered ethically and inclusively in partnership with various stakeholders including governments, non-profits, corporate organizations, and communities.

Bridging the Skills Gap

The necessity of this initiative is underscored by Microsoft’s recent Work Trend Index, revealing a stark reality: 90% of Indian leaders believe that new hires require novel skills to handle the impending AI growth, yet 78% of workers feel ill-equipped in AI capabilities to fulfill their current job requirements. This discrepancy highlights a critical need for comprehensive AI training and education.

ADVANTA(I)GE INDIA aims to narrow this skills gap by focusing on Tier 2 and Tier 3 cities, along with rural areas, thereby democratizing access to AI education. This approach ensures that the benefits of AI advancements are shared widely, fostering inclusive socio-economic development across the nation.

Inclusive Growth through Technology

Puneet Chandok, President of Microsoft India and South Asia, emphasized the initiative’s role in democratizing AI skills. “India stands on the brink of becoming a global leader in AI,” he stated, adding that achieving AI fluency on a massive scale is essential for the country’s journey towards this leadership.

By targeting three main areas—equipping India’s future workforce, upskilling government officials in AI, and enhancing the AI capabilities of non-profit organizations—ADVANTA(I)GE INDIA is setting the foundation for a future where every citizen can leverage AI for growth and innovation.

Strategic Collaborations and Outreach

To realize its vision, Microsoft is collaborating with India’s Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship and 10 state governments. This partnership aims to offer both basic and advanced AI training to half a million students and job seekers in rural vocational education institutions and training centers, expanding Microsoft’s ongoing efforts to foster digital and cybersecurity skills among the youth.

Moreover, the initiative targets young women in Tier 2 and Tier 3 cities, providing them with in-depth AI technical training through a network of 5,000 trainers across higher education institutions. This effort is complemented by a campaign to raise awareness about responsible AI use and AI-enabled careers among 400,000 school students in remote and tribal regions.

Government officials are also a key focus, with plans to equip 250,000 officers with knowledge of generative AI to enhance their efficiency and service delivery. Additionally, Microsoft aims to empower 2,500 non-profits and NGOs to use AI skilling resources, benefiting 750,000 learners, including underserved youths and jobseekers.

Microsoft’s Ongoing Commitment to India

This initiative builds on Microsoft’s significant footprint in India, where it employs over 23,000 individuals across various cities and offers global cloud services from local datacenters. Through these efforts, Microsoft is not just aiming to skill millions in AI but also accelerating digital transformation across Indian startups, businesses, and government organizations, reinforcing its dedication to fostering a technologically empowered India.
