Brigadier Rajiv Williams (Retd.) is the former Corporate Head CSR of Jindal Stainless Steel.


Brig Rajiv Williams, a celebrated figure in both military and corporate spheres, has carved a niche for himself through his remarkable journey from the Indian Army to the realm of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) and Social Development. His transition from a distinguished military career to a visionary in corporate social initiatives exemplifies his multifaceted personality and dedication toward societal development.

A distinguished Yudh Seva Medal (YSM), Brigadier Rajiv Williams (Retd.) took premature retirement from the Indian Army in 2005.

Education

A Postgraduate of Madras University in International Relations, he is a member of several strategic security-related institutions and think tanks.

Military Excellence and Transition to Civil Life


Military Career Highlights

Brig Williams’ military career spanned 33 years, marked by exceptional service and bravery. Serving in various war and peace time locations, he spent nearly two decades in the challenging terrains of Jammu and Kashmir, including high-conflict zones like Drass, Kargil, and the Siachen Glacier. These experiences honed his leadership skills and resilience, shaping his future endeavors.

Transition to Corporate Social Responsibility

Post-retirement, Brig Williams chose to continue his service to society by joining Jindal Stainless Limited Group (JSL) as Group Head of CSR and Sustainability. His tenure of 17 years at JSL was transformative, not only for the organization but also for the communities it impacted. His foray into CSR marked a significant shift from military strategy to corporate philanthropy and sustainability.

Founded by OP Jindal in 1970, Jindal Stainless is the largest stainless steel manufacturing company in India and ranks among the top 10 stainless steel manufacturers in the world. 

Pioneering Efforts in CSR and Social Development

Initiatives and Achievements at JSL

At JSL, Brig Williams pioneered numerous projects focusing on education and skill development, public health care, women empowerment, sustainable agriculture, and clean drinking water, including innovative solar water projects. His efforts were not limited to these areas; he also developed strategies for carbon mitigation, ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) practices, and natural resource management.

Think Tank on Rare Earth Elements and Advocacy

One of his notable initiatives is the conceptualization of a ‘Think Tank’ on Rare Earth Elements (REM), emphasizing their strategic importance. He has been a vocal advocate for business and human rights, integrating these concepts into corporate strategies.

Apart from being a regular panelist at various forums and seminars like Indian Industry Associations, Ministry of Corporate Affairs, GIZ, etc., Brog. Williams has also represented the Indian CSR fraternity on global platforms like the United Nations and the Danish Institute of Human Rights, UK.

Writings

A prolific writer, Williams has written articles on varied topics from conflict prevention and security to matters relating to responsible business and corporate citizenship. He has co-authored books on IMA and on Siachen, the latter one published in 2011 titled ‘The Long Road to Siachen the Question Why’.

Consultant and Advisor: Expanding Horizons

Facilitating Corporate and Developmental Projects

In his current role as an Advisor and Consultant in CSR and Sustainability, Brig Williams guides corporations and development organizations in implementing effective CSR projects and ESG frameworks. His expertise is sought after in various domains, including renewable energy projects centered around solar power and REMs.

Contributions to Academia and Industry

His influence extends to academia and industry through online and offline talks at universities, institutions, and forums, focusing on CSR, business leadership, and human rights. Brig Williams serves on various governing bodies, contributing his insights and experiences to shape policies and strategies.

Recognitions and Awards

Military and Civil Honors

Brig Williams’ gallantry and leadership in the military were recognized with prestigious awards like the Yudh Seva Medal and Mention in Dispatches. In the civilian domain, his contributions have been acknowledged with awards such as the ‘Asia Pacific Leadership Award’, ‘Top 100 Most Impactful Global CSR Leaders Award’, and the ‘Mahatma Award for CSR’.

Leadership in CSR and Human Rights

As the Convener of the UNGC Human Rights Committee, he played a pivotal role in creating the ‘India CEO Forum on Business and Human Rights’, under the chairmanship of Mr. Narayana Murthy. This initiative reflects his commitment to integrating human rights within business practices.

Legacy and Future Endeavors

A Prolific Writer and Speaker

Brig Williams is not only a strategist and advisor but also a prolific writer and speaker. He has co-authored books on military subjects, such as the ‘Siachen Glacier’, and has penned numerous papers on conflict prevention, security, and corporate citizenship.

His recent work on CSR is prominently featured in the book ‘CSR in India’, highlighting his continued influence in the field. Brig Williams’ vision for the future encompasses ongoing contributions to sustainability, corporate responsibility, and global discourse on these crucial issues.
