Future literacy is a vital skill for navigating the complex and uncertain world of today and tomorrow.

  • Future literacy is the ability to use the future as a tool for understanding and influencing the present, not about predicting or forecasting the future
  • Future literacy can help people to cope with uncertainty, complexity and change, challenge dominant narratives, collaborate with others, and create positive social change and innovation

What is Future Literacy?

Future literacy is the ability to use the future as a tool for understanding and influencing the present. It is not about predicting or forecasting the future, but rather about exploring different possible, probable and preferable futures. Future literacy enables people to:

  • Recognize the assumptions and expectations that shape their views of the future
  • Reframe their perspectives and narratives to open up new possibilities and alternatives
  • Reimagine their actions and decisions to create more desirable and sustainable outcomes

Why is Future Literacy Important?

Future literacy is important because it helps people to cope with uncertainty, complexity and change in a rapidly evolving world. It also empowers people to:

  • Challenge the dominant and often oppressive narratives that limit their choices and agency
  • Collaborate with others who have different perspectives and values to co-create shared visions and solutions
  • Create positive social change and innovation that aligns with their aspirations and values

How can Future Literacy be Developed?

Future literacy can be developed through various methods and practices that engage people in imagining and exploring different futures. Some of these methods and practices are:

  • Scenarios: Stories that describe plausible futures based on different drivers and uncertainties
  • Backcasting: A process of working backwards from a desired future to identify the steps and actions needed to achieve it
  • Foresight games: Interactive and playful activities that stimulate creativity and learning about the future

What are the Benefits of Future Literacy?

Future literacy can have various benefits for individuals, organizations and societies. Some of these benefits are:

  • Enhanced learning: Future literacy can foster critical thinking, creativity, curiosity and adaptability
  • Improved decision-making: Future literacy can help to identify opportunities, risks, trade-offs and consequences of different choices
  • Increased resilience: Future literacy can help to anticipate and prepare for potential shocks, disruptions and transformations

It can help people to understand, imagine and shape the future in more meaningful and responsible ways. Future literacy can also enable people to create a better future for themselves and others.
