Asian Games 2023: The Indian shooting contingent was the star of the show, winning six gold, seven silver and four bronze medals.ย

India shines at Asian Games 2023 with 33 medals, shooters lead the way

India has concluded its campaign at the 19th Asian Games in Hangzhou, China, with a total of 33 medals, including eight gold, 12 silver and 13 bronze. The Indian shooters were the most successful, winning 17 medals, followed by the rowers with six medals.

Shooting Stars

The Indian shooting contingent was the star of the show, winning six gold, seven silver and four bronze medals.ย The menโ€™s 10m air rifle team of Rudrankksh Patil, Divyansh Singh Panwar and Aishwary Pratap Singh Tomar clinched the gold medal with a world record score of 1889.8 points.ย Patil also won the individual gold in the same event with another world record score of 252.8 points.

The womenโ€™s 10m air rifle team of Ramita Jindal, Manu Bhaker and Elavenil Valarivan won the silver medal, while Jindal also bagged a bronze in the individual event.ย Bhaker also won two more silver medals in the womenโ€™s 10m air pistol and mixed team 10m air pistol events.

Other gold medalists in shooting were Abhishek Verma (menโ€™s 10m air pistol), Rahi Sarnobat (womenโ€™s 25m pistol) and Angad Vir Singh Bajwa (menโ€™s skeet).ย The Indian shooters also won silver medals in the menโ€™s 25m rapid fire pistol team, womenโ€™s trap team and mixed team trap events, and bronze medals in the menโ€™s trap team, womenโ€™s skeet team and mixed team skeet events.

Rowing to glory

The Indian rowers also impressed with their performance, winning one gold, three silver and two bronze medals.ย The gold medal came from the menโ€™s lightweight quadruple sculls team of Arjun Lal Jat, Arvind Singh, Dattu Baban Bhokanal and Jakar Khan.ย They finished ahead of Uzbekistan and Japan with a time of 6:05.99 minutes.

The silver medals were won by the menโ€™s lightweight double sculls team of Rohit Kumar and Bhagwan Singh, the menโ€™s pair team of Om Prakash and Sukhmeet Singh, and the menโ€™s eight team of Arjun Lal Jat, Arvind Singh, Dattu Baban Bhokanal, Jakar Khan, Om Prakash, Sukhmeet Singh, Tejash Hanamant Shinde and Vishnu Saravanan Sujeesh.ย The bronze medals were won by the menโ€™s four team of Bittu Singh, Gurinder Singh, Gurpreet Singh and Pranay Ganesh Naukarkar, and the womenโ€™s four team of Annu, Komal Pal, Monika Kumari and Navneet Kaur.

India also won gold medals in cricket (womenโ€™s T20), equestrian (individual eventing), kabaddi (womenโ€™s team) and wrestling (menโ€™s freestyle 65 kg).ย The cricket team defeated Pakistan by seven wickets in the final3, while Fouaad Mirza became the first Indian to win an equestrian gold medal at the Asian Games.ย The kabaddi team retained their title by beating Iran in a thrilling final3, while Bajrang Punia continued his dominance in wrestling by defeating Japanโ€™s Takuto Otoguro.

The silver medals came from badminton (mixed team), boxing (womenโ€™s flyweight), cricket (menโ€™s T20), equestrian (team eventing), fencing (womenโ€™s sabre team), hockey (menโ€™s team), judo (womenโ€™s half-heavyweight) and wrestling (menโ€™s freestyle 57 kg).ย The badminton team lost to China in the final, while Nikhat Zareen settled for silver after losing to Chinaโ€™s Chang Yuan.ย The cricket team lost to Bangladesh by five wickets in a nail-biting final, while the equestrian team finished behind Japan.ย The fencing team lost to Republic of Korea in the final, while the hockey team lost to Pakistan in a penalty shootout.ย Tulika Mann lost to Japanโ€™s Akira Sone in judo, while Ravi Kumar Dahiya lost to Japanโ€™s Yuki Takahashi in wrestling.

India Bronze Medalist

The bronze medals came from archery (mixed team recurve), athletics (womenโ€™s discus throw), boxing (womenโ€™s welterweight), fencing (menโ€™s epee team), hockey (womenโ€™s team), judo (menโ€™s half-middleweight), shooting (mixed team 10m air pistol), taekwondo (womenโ€™s 49 kg), weightlifting (womenโ€™s 49 kg) and wrestling (menโ€™s freestyle 74 kg and 86 kg, and womenโ€™s freestyle 53 kg and 62 kg).ย The archery team of Atanu Das and Deepika Kumari beat Chinese Taipei in the bronze medal match, while Kamalpreet Kaur threw 64.76 metres to win the bronze in discus throw.ย Lovlina Borgohain lost to Chinaโ€™s Gu Hong in the semi-finals of boxing, while the fencing team lost to Japan in the semi-finals.ย The hockey team beat China in the bronze medal match, while Avtar Singh lost to Japanโ€™s Shoichiro Mukai in the semi-finals of judo.ย Manu Bhaker and Abhishek Verma won the bronze in shooting5, while Simranjit Kaur won the bronze in taekwondo.ย Mirabai Chanu lifted a total of 192 kg to win the bronze in weightlifting, while Narsingh Yadav, Deepak Punia, Vinesh Phogat and Sonam Malik won the bronze medals in wrestling.

India finished fourth in the overall medal table, behind China, Japan and Republic of Korea. India improved its gold medal tally from seven in Jakarta in 2018 to eight in Hangzhou in 2023. India also achieved its best-ever performance in shooting and rowing at the Asian Games. India also qualified for the Paris Olympics in nine sports – archery, artistic swimming, boxing, breaking, hockey, modern pentathlon, sailing, tennis and water polo.
