5 Key Highlights of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi's Address at the G-7 Summit

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi is attending the G7 summit, being held during May 19-21, in Hiroshima, Japan. He is invited to the summit as a guest by Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida, who wants Modi to explain to G7 leaders what he intends to put on the agenda for the G20 summit regarding global challenges including food security. Indian Prime Minister has advocated a diplomatic solution to the conflict and has maintained communication with both Russia and Ukraine.

Here are the 5 key highlights of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s opening statement at Working Session 6 of the G7 Summit, in Hiroshima, Japan:

  1. Global food security

Modi called for the G-7 to work together to address the global food security crisis, which has been exacerbated by the war in Ukraine. He proposed a number of measures, including strengthening global fertilizer supply chains, promoting natural farming, and raising awareness about millets.

  1. Health security

Modi also called for the G-7 to work together to strengthen global health security. He highlighted the need to build resilient healthcare systems, promote holistic healthcare, and expand research into traditional medicine.

  1. Development model

Modi called for a new development model that is more sustainable and equitable. He argued that the current model of development, which is based on consumerism, is not sustainable and is a hindrance to the progress of developing countries.

  1. Women development

Modi highlighted India’s progress in women’s development. He noted that India has a woman president and that 33% of seats in local government are reserved for women. He also spoke about the laws that India has enacted to protect the rights of transgender persons.

  1. G20-G7 link

Modi expressed confidence that the G-7 summit would be useful in creating an important link between the agenda of the G20 and the G7. He also said that he hoped the summit would succeed in prioritizing the hopes and expectations of the Global South.

In addition to these key highlights, Modi also spoke about a number of other issues, including climate change, digital technology, and infrastructure. He called for the G-7 to work with developing countries to address these challenges and to build a more sustainable and equitable future.
