New Delhi: Panchayati Raj Institutions (PRIs) play a crucial role in the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in India. The Ministry of Panchayati Raj has adopted a thematic approach to the SDGs, with nine themes covering various goals and mapped to different nodal ministries and departments.
This approach aims to make the SDGs more accessible and understandable to PRIs and facilitate their implementation at the local level with community involvement.
To support the implementation of the SDGs at the PRI level, the Ministry has implemented the Centrally Sponsored Scheme of Rashtriya Gram Swaraj Abhiyan (RGSA). This scheme, which was implemented from 2018-19 to 2021-22 and has been revamped for 2022-23 to 2025-26, aims to capacitate elected representatives and functionaries to deliver on the SDGs through participatory local planning at the Gram Panchayat level.
The scheme is demand-driven and funds are released to states and union territories on the basis of their Annual Action Plans as approved by the Central Empowered Committee of RGSA. There is no fixed target for the scheme.
