Unique and first-of-its-kind in Odisha, the initiative was taken up by GKEL’s MD after witnessing a couple of major road mishaps on NH-55.

DHEKANAL (Odisha): Satyabadi Dhira, a resident of Manpur village of Mangalpur Panchayat, who is suffering from multiple ailments since a long time, is eagerly looking forward to getting better treatment from a nationally renowned hospital group. For a person who is forced to travel around 50 km every week for tests, check-up and medication that he can ill-afford, Satyabadi feels his dream has finally come true. Like Satyabadi, a thousand other people now look up to GMR Kamalanga Energy Limited (GKEL) for quality medicare.

GKEL is part of the GMR Group that has a global presence in the infrastructure arena with established credentials. GKEL, is setting up a 1,400 MW Coal-based Thermal Power Plant at Kamalanga in Dhenkanal district, has joined hands with the prestigious CARE Group to set up a 30-bedded state-of-art multi-specialty hospital near its project site at Kamalanga, as part of its CSR activities. The hospital will open for public service shortly.

Satyabadi, who is eagerly awaiting the hospital’s inaugural, says “We are indeed grateful to the GMR Group for bringing the CARE Group to Kamalanga. Poor people like us can now get specialized medical care at our doorstep.”

Like Satyabadi, local villagers have been forced to travel to district hospitals in Dhenkanal or Angul for standard medical treatment. But what lies in their cup of woes?  They face big hurdles to reach government-run district hospitals as commuting facilities are poor and the appalling condition of National Highway-55 (NH-55) makes travel most cumbersome besides good Doctors are not available

At GKEL’s CARE specialty hospital, more than  well known specialist doctors would be available round-the-clock to attend to patients. They will be supported by good paramedical staff. Our mission is to make sustainable impact on the human development on the under served communities through initiatives in Education,Health and lively hoods.

Commenting on the new hospital, Mr. K.V.V. Rao, Managing Director, GKEL, said, “The idea of setting up a well equipped 30-bedded hospital  with the prestigious CARE Group in a remote part of Dhenkanal District is to ensure that quality medical care is available to the local people almost at their doorstep.  In our own humble way, we want to show that we care about villagers who live in our neighborhood.”

“GKEL made a beginning in this direction by setting up and fully equipping the Accident Care Unit at the Dhenkanal District Hospital,” says Rao. Unique and first-of-its-kind in Odisha, the initiative was taken up by GKEL’s MD after witnessing a couple of major road mishaps on NH-55. NH-55, which is passing through Dhenkanal District, has turned itself into a death trap with increasing road accident cases over the years.

“The window of survival for accident victims is very small. Therefore, timely medical attention backed up with facilities available in the Accident Care Unit increase the chances of survival of accident victims manifold,” Rao remarks, adding, “We hope that the District Hospital makes optimum use of the facility.”

GKEL has also been extremely responsive in times of medical emergencies of local villagers. It provides a 24X7 ambulance service to reach patients to district hospitals. It has also organized a number of health camps.

“Most of GKEL’s CSR interventions are offered through the GMR Varalakshmi Foundation,” remarks Rao. “In our CSR work, we are trying to build quality and excellence like we do in our professional work. That is the reason why we invited CARE to offer state-of-the-art health care services and DAV to offer contemporary education to the residents of Kamalanga and neighboring villages,” he adds.

After a long time, it appears that the residents of Dhenkanal have a Good Samaritan in their midst – GKEL!
