A step towards empowering women by making them functionally literate.

BHILWARA (Rajasthan): Hindustan Zinc Limited (HZL) Rampura Aguucha Mines is situated 65 km from main city. The inhabitation livelihood depends on Livestock, Agriculture and daily wages around the mine. Being a world class mining company, HZL always focused to raise the quality of life of people residing around the mine. In this regards HZL implemented various community development project under CSR for ensuring holistic development of the community.
Case: Sayari Devi is literate and belongs to lower middle class. She lives at village post-Bhojras, Tehsil-Hurda, District-Bhilwara. She lives with husband and 2 daughters and 3 sons. Her annual income is Rs. 48,000 and her source of income is Agriculture, daily wages, Animal rearing. She is a beneficiary of Hindustan Zinc’s Adult Education Programme under Corporate Social Responsibility.
Adult education programme is a comprehensive programme by Hindustan Zinc Limited to impart functional literacy to women in rural areas with broader goal to empower women and raise their socio economic status in society.
India currently has the largest illiterate population of any nation in the world Two third of all illiterates are women. Despite government programs, India’s literacy rate increased only “sluggishly. Realizing the distressful situation Hindustan Zinc Limited has undertaken Adult Education as a mass movement. Adult education is imparted tinder two aspects: (1) Adult Literacy i.e. education for those women who never had schooling before; and, (2) Continuation education i.e. education for those women who had some schooling before. Adult Education Centres seeks to impart functional literacy to all non-literate women. Women of age group 15-40 years are made functionally literate.
Bhojras is a small village of Hurda Tehsil in Bhilwara. Female literacy level was very low. Hindustan Zinc Limited sensitized women for gaining literacy and started Adult Education centre in the village. Women from 24 families who had no or minimal schooling gained functional literacy.
Sayari Devi who became literate after attending adult education programme being run by HZL in Bhojras, tells how she got an opportunity to study again and her life got transformed by HZL’s efforts
When I was eight, my parents arranged my marriage unbeknownst to me. I was unaware that I am married off and sent to live in another village with my husband and his family and I was pulled out of school .I always desired to study again but could not till HZL extended its hands towards women like me.
I along with 24 other women started going to the centre in the evening after getting free from household work. Our trainer taught us about Alphabets, numbers. I attended the evening classes of Geeta madam daily without fail for three months and today I can read and write and I am so proud that instead of thumb impressions I can now do signatures. Now every day in the evening I and my youngest son sit together and we both study.
