Synopsis of the Story

Unique and innovative games include Mobius Digital (Outer Wilds), That Game Company (Journey), Heart Machine (Hyper Light Drifter), Innersloth (Among Us), and Megacrit (Slay the Spire). They use digital distribution platforms to reach a wider audience.

We can all name a handful of big, AAA studios who develop amazing games. Despite these studios’ knack for polished, tight and graphically impressive titles, when it comes to game development they often aren’t the ones innovating. That’s where indie game developers come in. Indie game devs are the source of some of the most innovative and unique games. This can be chalked up to the fact that they don’t have institutional backing, so they have to rely on their creativity and programming skills to make their games stand out. So, by keeping an eye on indie game developers, you can discover some of the most creative and unique games around.

Let’s have a look at five such studios you should be keeping your eye on.

What is an Indie Game Developer?

First off, let’s define exactly what we mean by indie.

An indie game developer is an individual or small team of developers who create video games without the financial support of a publisher. Indie game developers may have a wide range of backgrounds and skills, but they all share a common passion for creating unique and engaging games.

Indie game developers often focus on smaller projects, such as mobile games, browser-based titles or short narrative experiences, and often use digital distribution platforms like Steam or the App Store to reach a wider audience. They typically work with limited resources, relying on their creative passion to make their games stand out, thus, Steam accounts with such games are much less common and highly sought-after.

Mobius Digital

Mobius Digital is an independent game development studio based in San Francisco, California. Founded in 2014 by Lina Chen, Mobius Digital has become renowned for their innovative approach to game design. The studio is responsible for the critically acclaimed exploration game, Outer Wilds, which was released in 2019. The game was quickly praised for its unique take on an open-world adventure, and has been nominated for several awards, including the 2019 Game of the Year. If you’ve played Outer Wilds, you know just how special this game is.

Since release, they have also developed and released one DLC: Outer Wilds: Echoes of the Eye.

Mobius Digital is currently working on their next game.

That Game Company

If you have gamed on the PS3, you’ll remember how big a deal Journey was, thanks to its strong visuals and artistic direction. Based in Santa Monica, California, That Game Company is best known for their critically acclaimed titles, such as “Journey,” “Flower,” and “Sky: Children of the Light.” These games are notable for their inventive gameplay and artistry, earning the studio numerous awards and accolades in the process.

That Game Company is also known for their unique approach to game design, with their titles often being used as examples of the potential for interactive media to create emotionally powerful experiences.

Heart Machine

Founded by Alec Holowka and Jaime Sanchez, Heart Machine is based in Los Angeles, California. The studio is known for their memorable, unique style of game design and art direction. Mainly in the form of their unique blend of pixel art visuals, atmospheric soundtracks, and compelling narratives.

Among their titles are Hyper Light Drifter and Solar Ash both of which take great inspiration from classics like The Legend of Zelda These games are immediately recognisable thanks to their captivating stories and immersive worlds, comparable to that of Genshin Impact. People are drawn to Heart Machine’s games due to their innovative approach to game design and their commitment to creating unique and engaging experiences.

Innersloth

Innersloth has made the massively successful game, Among Us. Chances are you’ve played Among Us. But if not, you’ve likely seen this game on Twitch or YouTube, especially since it exploded in popularity over the pandemic period.

If not, here’s how it works in a nutshell. Players work together to identify the impostor and complete their tasks before the impostor sabotages their efforts and kills them. To this day, it is constantly receiving updates with new content and map options. It has become one of the most popular indie games of all time, and it is easy to see why.

Megacrit

To date, Mega Crit games have only released one game—but it made a splash!

Slay the Spire is a roguelike deck-building game created by independent game development studio Megacrit. Players build a deck of cards to battle monsters, defeat bosses and progress further through the dungeon. It is a single-player game that combines elements from roguelike games, card games, and strategy games. Players must utilize their deck of cards to strategically combat their enemies, while also managing their resources and making difficult decisions.

Slay the Spire has received critical acclaim for its unique combination of genres and is one of the most successful indie games of recent years.
