NEW DELHI (India CSR): Wipro Limited, a global leader in information technology, consulting, and business process services, has achieved significant milestones in its intellectual property (IP) strategy. As of March 31, 2024, the company has secured an impressive total of 1,786 registered patents across various countries, underscoring its commitment to innovation and technological advancement. Additionally, Wipro filed 21 new patents during the last fiscal year, further solidifying its position as a pioneer in the knowledge-intensive industry.

Wipro Limited, a leader in the knowledge-intensive industry, underscores the pivotal role of Intellectual Property (IP) in driving business competitiveness and profitability. With an extensive IP portfolio, Wipro differentiates its products and services, introduces novel benefits, reduces costs, and enhances quality. The company leverages a combination of patents, copyrights, trademarks, design laws, trade secrets, confidentiality procedures, and contractual provisions to protect its IP.

Strategic IP Development

Wipro has heavily invested in developing IP across business solutions, products, platforms, and service accelerators. This strategic IP development allows Wipro to offer standardized solutions to customers, providing significant time-to-market advantages over customized solutions that typically involve higher costs and longer timelines. Through its robust IP portfolio, Wipro can introduce innovative commercial models for service delivery.

Key Highlights

Patent Portfolio

  1. Expansion of Patent Portfolio:
The substantial growth in Wipro’s patent portfolio highlights the company’s dedication to fostering innovation. With 1,786 registered patents globally, Wipro continues to lead in developing cutting-edge solutions that enhance competitiveness and service quality.
  2. New Patent Filings:
In the fiscal year ending March 31, 2024, Wipro filed 21 new patents, showcasing its relentless pursuit of new technologies and solutions. This strategic move is part of Wipro’s broader effort to stay ahead in a rapidly evolving technological landscape.
  3. Global Reach:
Wipro’s patent portfolio spans multiple countries, reflecting the company’s extensive international footprint and its ability to innovate on a global scale. This wide-reaching IP strategy ensures that Wipro remains at the forefront of technological advancements worldwide.

Trademark Holdings

According to annual report 2023-24, Wipro’s trademark portfolio is equally impressive, with 328 registered trademarks as of March 31, 2024. These include registered community trademarks in India, Japan, the United States, Malaysia, and over 70 other countries. The company also has 46 trademark applications pending registration in various jurisdictions. This broad trademark portfolio reinforces Wipro’s brand presence and protects its intellectual assets globally.

Strategic Investments in IP

  1. Research and Development:
Wipro’s significant investments in research and development (R&D) are central to its IP strategy. By continuously enhancing its R&D capabilities, Wipro develops new technologies that maintain its competitive edge in the market.
  2. Acquisitions:
Strategic acquisitions have played a crucial role in bolstering Wipro’s IP portfolio. Notable acquisitions, such as the 60% equity interest in Aggne Global Inc. and Aggne Global IT Services Private Limited, have expanded Wipro’s technological capabilities and IP assets, particularly in the insurance and insurtech industries.
  3. Revenue from IP:
A large portion of Wipro’s revenue is derived from the export of products and services developed using its proprietary IP. For the fiscal year ended March 31, 2024, 97% of the company’s total segment revenue came from international markets, highlighting the global impact of its IP-driven solutions.
