With the approach of the 2024 presidential election cycle in the United States, the list of potential candidates for the presidency is beginning to emerge.
The 2024 presidential election will be an important one for the United States, with the country facing a host of pressing issues, including the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, climate change, economic inequality, and racial justice. As the candidates begin to stake out their positions and articulate their visions for the future, voters will be looking for leaders who can bring the country together and chart a course forward that benefits all Americans.
The pool of potential presidential candidates is starting to take shape as the United States prepares for another presidential election cycle in 2024. While a few candidates from both parties have already declared their intentions to run, it is anticipated that the contest would be dominated by Joe Biden and Donald Trump, the two candidates who competed for the presidency in 2020.
The race begins. Four years after a historically large number of candidates ran for president, the field for the 2024 campaign is starting out small and is likely to be headlined by the same two men who ran last time: President Biden and Donald Trump. Here’s who has entered the race so far, and who else might run:
Donald Trump: Seeking to Retake the Presidency
To reclaim the position he lost in 2020, the former president is running. He still has a sizable and devoted fan base despite having a little less clout within the Republican Party and being the subject of various legal inquiries. In the primary, multiple candidates could help him by splitting the small anti-Trump vote.
Nikki Haley: On-again, Off-again Embrace of Trump
The former governor of South Carolina and U.N. ambassador under Trump has presented herself as a member of “a new generation of leadership” and emphasized her life experience as a daughter of Indian immigrants. She was long seen as a rising G.O.P. star but her allure in the party has declined amid her on-again, off-again embrace of Trump.
Vivek Ramaswamy: Anti-Woke Multimillionaire Entrepreneur and GOP Contender
The multimillionaire entrepreneur and author describes himself as “anti-woke” and is known in right-wing circles for opposing corporate efforts to advance political, social and environmental causes. He has never held elected office and does not have the name recognition of most other G.O.P. contenders.
Joe Biden: Expected to Run for Second Term
Joseph Biden has not yet formally announced his campaign for a second term on the Democratic side. He is anticipated to run, though, and his approach will probably be to portray the campaign as one between an established leader and a group of opponents who believe in conspiracies. Self-help author Marianne Williamson, who served as Oprah Winfrey’s spiritual advisor for a time, has also declared her candidature, but few in the Democratic Party are giving her much credence.
Marianne Williamson: Long Shot Democratic Candidate
The self-help author and former spiritual adviser to Oprah Winfrey is the first Democrat to formally enter the race. Kicking off her second presidential campaign, Williamson called Biden a “weak choice” and said the party shouldn’t fear a primary. Few in Democratic politics are taking her entry into the race seriously.
Others who are likely to run
Among the other potential Republican candidates are Gov. Ron DeSantis of Florida, former Vice President Mike Pence, former Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, Senator Tim Scott of South Carolina, and Gov. Chris Sununu of New Hampshire. Each of these contenders brings their own strengths and weaknesses to the table, and the Republican primary is likely to be fiercely contested.
