Real estate entrepreneur and social media personality CJ Roy’s sudden death during an Income Tax investigation has shocked Bengaluru and the southern Indian business community

KARNATAKA (India CSR): Bengaluru witnessed a tragic and shocking incident on Friday as Confident Group chairman and founder CJ Roy was found dead at his office while Income Tax raids were underway. The 57-year-old real estate tycoon allegedly died by suicide after sustaining a gunshot injury inside his private cabin in the city’s Langford Town area.

Roy’s death has sent ripples through the corporate world, raising serious questions about the pressures faced by business leaders under scrutiny and the circumstances surrounding high-profile investigations.

Authorities have launched a detailed probe into the case, while political leaders, industry insiders, and Roy’s family members have demanded clarity on what led to the tragic moment.

CJ Roy Found Dead Amid Ongoing Income Tax Searches

According to police officials, CJ Roy was at his Bengaluru office when Income Tax officers were conducting searches linked to his business operations. The raids were reportedly part of a wider investigation into alleged financial irregularities and assets disproportionate to known sources of income.

Bengaluru Police Commissioner Seemant Kumar Singh, speaking to reporters, said preliminary evidence suggests Roy shot himself during questioning.

“Prima facie, it appears that Confident Group chairperson and founder C J Roy shot himself dead,” Singh stated after visiting the spot.

The incident reportedly occurred between 3 pm and 3.30 pm, while the IT team had been carrying out searches for the past three days.

Timeline of Events Leading to the Tragedy

Sources familiar with the investigation provided a blow-by-blow account of the final hours.

  • Income Tax officers arrived at the office around noon
  • Roy entered the premises at approximately 2 pm
  • Officials allegedly asked him to review and sign certain documents
  • Between 3 pm and 3.10 pm, Roy reportedly went into his private cabin
  • Moments later, a gunshot was heard, and he collapsed

Police have not yet confirmed whether the cabin was under CCTV surveillance at the time.

The weapon used is believed to be a licensed pistol, though verification is still ongoing.

Who Was CJ Roy? A Prominent Name in South Indian Real Estate

CJ Roy, whose full name was Roy Chiriankandath Joseph, was one of the most recognisable real estate entrepreneurs in southern India. A native of Kochi, Kerala, Roy built Confident Group into a major property development brand with projects spanning Kerala, Karnataka, and other southern states.

The Confident Group became known for large residential apartment complexes, premium lifestyle housing, and ambitious commercial ventures.

Roy’s rise from modest beginnings to becoming a high-profile builder was often highlighted in interviews and business circles.

A Businessman With a Strong Public Persona

Unlike many corporate leaders, CJ Roy maintained an active public presence. He had a significant following on Instagram, reportedly over 1.3 million followers, where he shared glimpses of his lifestyle, luxury cars, and entrepreneurial journey.

However, he had disabled comments on his posts, suggesting he may have faced intense public attention or criticism.

Roy was also known for his interest in cinema and entertainment. He produced Malayalam films, including the big-budget movie “Casanova” (2012) starring superstar Mohanlal.

Confident Group also gained visibility through sponsorships of popular Malayalam television reality shows.

Income Tax Investigation and Allegations of Disproportionate Assets

The Income Tax Department’s raids reportedly began earlier this week, with teams from Kerala working alongside Bengaluru officials.

Investigators allegedly found evidence suggesting Roy held assets beyond his declared income. Authorities have not yet released an official statement detailing the exact findings.

Police Commissioner Singh noted that officers were still gathering information from the IT team.

“Only investigation will reveal what actually happened,” he said, adding that the case could proceed based on complaints filed by the family.

Roy’s brother reportedly told local media that IT officials had first questioned him in December and later called him back from Dubai before resuming searches on January 28.

Family Grief and Calls for Accountability

Roy’s wife and two children, who were based in Dubai, are expected to arrive in Bengaluru shortly.

Meanwhile, Roy’s family has reportedly blamed Income Tax officials from Kerala, alleging that repeated questioning and raids may have contributed to his distress.

The tragedy has reignited debate over mental pressure during prolonged investigations, especially involving high-profile corporate figures.

Political and Industry Reactions Pour In

Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar expressed shock over Roy’s death and announced that a high-level investigation would be conducted.

“This shouldn’t have happened. He was a good businessman,” Shivakumar said, adding that the government would bring out the truth after detailed inquiry.

The real estate community in Kerala and Karnataka has also reacted with disbelief, as Confident Group has thousands of customers and employees linked to its projects.

In a tribute posted on Facebook, the company called Roy its “beloved leader” and said his vision would continue to guide the organisation.

Investigation Continues Into Circumstances of Death

Police have registered a case and are examining all angles, including whether any external pressure or abetment may have played a role.

Officials are expected to question Income Tax officers, office staff, and review evidence from the scene.

CJ Roy’s death marks one of the most high-profile business tragedies in Bengaluru in recent years, leaving behind unanswered questions and a stunned business world.
