STL has partnered with VSTF to improve water and sanitation management in the region through its water resilience program.
In honour of World Water Day, STL declared that it had filled 12 villages in Aurangabad, Maharashtra, India with 1.4 billion litres of water. Women in Aurangabad must go great distances to get water, and during the summer, reserves soon run out, necessitating the purchase of water. To enhance water and sanitation management in the area, STL and Village Social Transformation Foundation (VSTF) collaborated to establish a water resilience programme.
Water Conservation and Replenishment
In addition to making significant efforts to conserve and restore water both at its industrial plants and in rural communities, STL operates its premier glass, optical fibre, and cable facilities out of Aurangabad. The business constructed sensor-based sewage treatment, automated dosing systems, and dashboards in Aurangabad last year in order to recycle wastewater for horticulture. It also collected over 9 million litres of rainfall there. Its water management initiatives encourage group action to alleviate the region’s water constraint.
Good Results and Sustainable Water Refilling Solutions
By the implementation of sustainable water replenishment strategies through its water resilience programme, STL has produced favourable results through grassroots activities. As part of the programme, 1.4 billion litres of water will be replenished, 85 water harvesting, conservation, and groundwater replenishment structures will be built or renovated, 5,200 households will have access to clean drinking water, 79 hectares of agricultural land will receive micro-irrigation, and 6,700 community members will receive training.
Through the program, the company has deployed sustainable solutions for water replenishment and achieved positive outcomes through grass-root-level initiatives. These include:
- Replenishment of 1.4 billion litres of water through water harvesting structures, recharge shafts for groundwater and redevelopment of large water conservation structures
- Building and redevelopment of 85 water conservation, harvesting and groundwater replenishment structures
- Provisioning of clean drinking water for ~5,200 households
- Bringing micro-irrigation across 79 hectares of agricultural land
- Training for ~6,700 community members
The Commitment to Water Positiveness
Akanksha Sharma, Global ESG Head, STL, commented on the accomplishment by stating that their approach to water positively is totally in line with SDGs 6 and 12. STL is confident that their coordinated efforts can hasten the transformation in water management for both India and the rest of the world.
