UDAIPUR: Vedanta’s Group Company Hindustan Zinc will sponsor Ms. Krishna Poonia the National Women Discus-Throw Champion of India and the first Indian women to win a gold medal in the track and field events at Commonwealth Games 2010.
Krishna Poonia quest for the medal begins for the 2014 Incheon (South Korea) Asian Games and Commonwealth Games at Glasgow, Scotland and 2016 Olympics at Rio. The two-times Asian Games Medalist at Doha in 2006 and Guangzhou, China in 2010, Ms. Krishna Poonia is the proud recipient of the Arjuna Award in 2010 and Padma Sri Award in 2011.
Hindustan Zinc has been actively involved in sponsoring athletes and in the past also supported sports persons like Mr. Bhupendra Vyas, 7 Gold Medals winner of Commonwealth Games in Power-Lifting event, Ms. Mala Sukhwal – Gold Medalist in Women Power-Lifting, Ms. Bhakti Sharma – Swimming Champion and Mr. Jabbar Mohammed the Volleyball Player.
Vedanta Group has been supportive of sports in India and also overseas. Sesa Goa has developed a Sesa Football Academy in Goa on the reclaimed mine. Hindustan Zinc has a football stadium at Zawar where every year national football tournaments are held and also a stadium at Rajsamand in Rajasthan. Overseas, Vedanta’s group company in copper, Konkola Copper Mine, is also supporting sports like football, Tennis, Squash and golf.
Hindustan Zinc will be sponsoring Krishna Poonia for two years and the MoU is to be signed on 7th February 2013 at Hindustan Zinc’s Head Office in Udaipur sources informed. When contacted, Pavan Kaushik, Head – Corporate Communication confirmed the news and informed that the company has been supporting players earlier as well and Krishna Poonia is a symbol of pride for the women athletes in India and we are quite pleased to sponsor her.
Speaking to Krishna Poonia she also confirmed, “Vedanta’s group company Hindustan Zinc is sponsoring her and I am very happy that corporates like Vedanta are promoting sports persons.”
Krishna Poonia husband Virander Poonia is her coach and the proud winner of Dronacharya Award.
