Top 10 Pulse Producers in India by Production in 2022

Many heavy agricultural pieces of machinery are used in this pulse farming, like tractors or mini tractors, implements, harvesters and many more small tools.

India is the largest producer, importer and consumer of pulses in the world, accounting for nearly 30% of the world’s population; India imports 14% of pulses from the world.


Pluses have a very long history and have been an important source of food for both humans and animals for more than ten thousand years.

From 19 million ha in 1950โ€“51 to 28 million ha in 2020โ€“21, the area under pulses has grown. At the same time, the production of pulses surged by nearly 200 per cent during the same time span, from 8.41 million ha to 24 million ha. In 2021โ€“22, the yield of pulses per hectare was 823 kg.

India is the largest producer, importer and consumer of pulses in the world, accounting for nearly 30% of the world’s population; India imports 14% of pulses from the world.

Tur Whole (Pigeon Peas), Black Matpe (Urad), Green Moong, ChickPeas, and Yellow Peas are some of the several kinds of pulses imported by PEC in India.

There are 3 crop seasons where pulses are grown.

i. Kharif โ€“ a) Arhar (Tur), b) Urd (Blackgram), c) Moong (Greengram), d) Lobia (Cowpea), e) Kulthi (Horsegram) and f) Moth;

ii. Rabi โ€“ a) Gram, b) Lentil, c) Pea, d) Lathyrus and e) Rajmash

iii. Summer โ€“ a) Greengram, b) Blackgram and c) Cowpea

There are various pulse-producing states in India. Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Uttar Pradesh, and Karnataka are the top-producing states of pulses in India.

Tells talk Top 10 Largest Producers of Pulses in India

 1. Rajasthan – Among all Indian states, Madhya Pradesh produced the most pulses during the financial year 2018.

In the financial year 2022, Rajasthan produced more pulses than any other Indian state (nearly 19%). In FY 2021โ€“22, the state will produce 4497.1 tons annually. The rabi season and the Kharif season are when the state produces the most arhar and pulses, such as moong, moth, moong, and gramme.

2. Madhya Pradesh – In the financial year 2021โ€“22, Madhya Pradesh produced 4108.4 tonnes of pulses. The top three pulses are gramme, tur, and urad, which are extensively planted and developed in Madhya Pradesh.

3. Maharashtra – The third-largest producer of pulses in India is Maharashtra. In the financial year 2021โ€“22, the state will produce 3736.0 tons of pulses annually. Maharashtra has about 20 lakh hectares of land that is primarily used for the cultivation of tur pulse.

4. Uttar Pradesh – In terms of India’s production of pulses, Uttar Pradesh comes in fourth place. UP produces 2447.3 tones of pulses annually for India in the financial year 2021โ€“22. Since gramme pulse has the largest crop area for production, it tops the list of pulse names.

 5. Karnataka – When it comes to producing pulses in India, Karnataka comes in sixth. For the financial year 2021โ€“22, the state produced 2155.9 tonnes annually. The state is in charge of 60% of the growth of the pigeon pea and chickpea crops also, including horse gramme, black gramme, and green gramme, are grown in the state.

6. Andra Pradesh – The sixth-largest producer of pulses in India is Andhra Pradesh. And, in the financial year 2021โ€“22, the state produced 1166.7 tonnes of pulses annually. In India, the state is where a variety of high-protein pulses are produced.

7. Gujarat – Gujarat produces 1057.3 tonnes of pulses annually, making it the seventh-largest producer in FY 2021โ€“22.

 8. Jharkhand – The yearly production of pulses in Jharkhand is 814.9 tonnes in the financial year 2021โ€“22. However, in 2020, the state produced 814 thousand metric tonnes annually.

 9. Tamil Nadu – In the financial year 2021โ€“22, Tamil Nadu’s annual production total of 605.4 tons. It has created land for pulses on an annual basis ranging from 3.97 to 7.85 lakh acres over the past six years.

 10. Telangana – In our Top 10 list, Last but not least is Telangana. In the financial year 2020-21, Telangana produces 549.2 tonnes of pulses.
