JAMSHEDPUR: Tata Athletics Academy (TAA) cadet, Dutee Chand aced three gold medals with her outstanding performance in the U-19 girls group at the five-day 58th National School Games Athletics Championship at Etawah, Uttar Pradesh. Dutee, a natural sprinter, broke the National and meet records to emerge as the best athlete for her phenomenal feat at the meet this year.
Dutee, who hails from Odisha’s Jajpur district, rewrote the meet by clocking 11.98 secs in the 100m sprint, 24.57secs in the 200m and 55.71 secs in the 400m dash. Her timing in the 100m sprint equaled the national record.
Speedster, Dutee with her consistent performance, joins the league of her predecessors from Tata Athletics Academy — Sinimol Paulos, Ashwini Nakunji, Namita Kabat and Amit Kumar — all sprinters of national acclaim.
Congratulating Dutee, Mr. Sanjiv Paul, Vice President, Corporate Services Tata Steel Ltd. said “We’re extremely proud and happy on Dutee’s achievement. She is one of the achievers of the academy and we’ll continue to facilitate this talented sprinter with all the required support to excel in the sport. We’re hoping to see her at the international tracks soon and bring many laurels home.”
The Tata Athletics Academy was inaugurated in May, 2004 by the then M.D. Tata Steel, Mr. B. Muthuraman along with The Flying Sikh, Milkha Singh. In twelve years, the academy has produced several medal winners at various national meets. In the Academy they have been provided with boarding lodging, education, TA.DA for participation in the competition, sports kit, stipend, ceremonial dress etc.
