THOOTHUKUDI: Sterlite Copper, a unit of Vedanta Limited has initiated delisting and cleaning work in Maruthur Melakal Channel of Maruthur Reservoir. The inauguration of the project was held at Maruthur Melakal Channel on September 10, 2016.
A pooja was performed and the desilting & cleaning work commenced in the presence of C Murugeswaran, Business Head – Power, Acids & Public Relations, Sterlite Copper and Alangaram, Chairman, Maruthur Melakal Channel.
The desilting and cleaning work of Maruthur Melakal Channel started at Maruthur and will end at Vellur, covering a distance of 20 kms. As the water flow in the channel is slowed down due to excess weed growth, farmers are finding it difficult to get the required quantity of water for irrigation. In such scenario, the undertook project will allow free flow of water in the channel benefitting 30,000 farmers covering around 15,000 acres of agricultural land in and around Maruthur Melakal Channel. The cleaning work is expected to be completed within two weeks.
