Varanasi: 70-foot operated Singer sewing machines were distributed to the widow beneficiaries under the Joint partnership project of the Loomba Foundation and Lions Clubs International Foundation in Varanasi during International Widows Day celebration.
25 widow beneficiaries who overcame the challenges they faced are now able to earn sustainable income, were given a cash reward of INR 2100 as a token of appreciation. All the widows who attended the event, were given saree as a token of gift.
The Loomba Foundation, a United Nations-accredited global charity that focuses exclusively on the cause of widow empowerment, hosted an event at the Kadambini Banquet and Lawn, Varanasi on Sunday to mark the UN recognized International Widows Day and also to celebrate the success of the project that was carried out by The Loomba Foundation to empower 5000 widows in Varanasi.
Swati Singh, Minister of State (Independent Charge) Women Welfare, Mother and Child Welfare, N.R.I, Flood Control, Agricultural Exports, Agricultural Marketing and Agricultural Foreign Trade, Family welfare, Govt. of Uttar Pradesh, was the Chief Guest at the event.
Over 250 guests attended the event including widow beneficiaries and some notable dignitaries such as Sudhir Mohan, General Manager, Singer India Ltd, Rajat Kapoor, Managing Director, Indian Diaspora Club, Dr. Akhilesh Singh, Professor BHU, Varanasi and Ms. Sunita Singh, social activist.
Atul Palta, Director, Skills Training and Empowerment of the Loomba Foundation welcomed all the guests who attended the International Widows Day Event 2019 at Varanasi. Addressing the gathering, he mentioned the activities undertaken by The Loomba Foundation.
Swati Singh, Chief Guest, read the message sent by the Secretary General of the United Nations on the occasion and appreciated the efforts of The Loomba Foundation to empower widows around the country.
A cultural programme was organized by students of a renowned dance school of Varanasi with the support of Neetu Singh of Awaaz Foundation.
Rajat Kapoor, Managing Director of Indian Diaspora Club thanked all the VIP Guests, beneficiaries, coordinators, students, musicians, choreographers and media personnel for attending and making the IWD 2019 a successful event.
