Raksha Bandhan History and Legends

The origin of Raksha Bandhan can be traced back to ancient times when various legends and stories are associated with it. Some of the most popular ones are:

  • Indra and Sachi: According to the Bhavishya Purana, once Indra, the king of gods, was defeated by the demon king Bali in a war. His wife Sachi then tied a sacred thread on his wrist, given by Lord Vishnu, to protect him from further harm. Indra then regained his strength and defeated Bali with the help of the thread.
  • Krishna and Draupadi: According to the Mahabharata, once Krishna cut his finger while flying a kite. Draupadi, who was nearby, tore a piece of her saree and tied it around his wound to stop the bleeding. Krishna was touched by her gesture and promised to protect her from any trouble. He later fulfilled his promise by saving her from being disrobed by the Kauravas in the court.
  • Yama and Yamuna: According to another legend, Yama, the god of death, had not visited his sister Yamuna, the river goddess, for a long time. She then sent a message to him through a crow, requesting him to meet her. Yama obliged and came to see her. Yamuna was overjoyed and prepared a feast for him. She also tied a Rakhi on his wrist and asked him for a boon. Yama granted her the boon of immortality and declared that whoever ties a Rakhi on his sister’s wrist and promises to protect her will also become immortal.
