N Chandrasekaran’s journey from a young professional at TCS to the Chairman of Tata Sons is a testament to his visionary leadership and relentless pursuit of excellence.

Natarajan Chandrasekaran (TCS Chairman), widely known as N Chandrasekaran, has been a transformative force in the Indian corporate landscape. As the Chairman of Tata Sons, he oversees a conglomerate with more than 100 operating companies and annual revenues exceeding $150 billion. His leadership journey, marked by significant achievements and global recognition, began at Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) and has since propelled the Tata Group into new heights of innovation and growth.

Early Life and Education

N Chandrasekaran was born on June 2, 1963. He pursued a Bachelor’s degree in Applied Science and a Master’s degree in Computer Applications. These academic credentials laid a strong foundation for his illustrious career in technology and business.

Rise Through TCS Ranks

N Chandrasekaran joined TCS in 1987. Over three decades, he climbed the corporate ladder, eventually becoming the CEO and Chairman. Under his leadership, TCS not only consolidated its position as the largest private sector employer in India but also emerged as the country’s most valuable company. His strategic vision and execution capabilities were instrumental in TCS’s global expansion and success.

Leadership at Tata Sons

In October 2016, N Chandrasekaran joined the board of Tata Sons. By January 2017, he was appointed Chairman. His tenure has been characterized by a forward-looking approach, focusing on digital transformation, sustainability, and supply chain resilience.

Digital Transformation and Innovation

Under N Chandrasekaran’s leadership, the Tata Group has ventured into several new business areas. These include electronics manufacturing, semiconductors, EV battery manufacturing, consumer internet platforms, and mobile technology for 5G. His vision has driven the group to embrace cutting-edge technologies, ensuring its competitiveness in the global market.

Expansion into Aviation

One of the most notable achievements during his tenure has been the acquisition of Air India. This move marked Tata Group’s significant expansion in the aviation sector. The group is now building a large global airline, leveraging Air India’s extensive network and Tata’s operational excellence.

N Chandrasekaran’s contributions have been recognized globally. In 2022, he was awarded the Padma Bhushan, one of India’s highest civilian honors, for his achievements in trade and industry. The French Government also honored him with the Légion d’Honneur for his efforts in strengthening Indo-French economic ties. Additionally, he received the President Eisenhower Global Award for Leadership from the Business Council for International Understanding (BCIU) in the same year.

Beyond his role at Tata Sons, N Chandrasekaran holds several influential positions. He is the Co-Chair of the US-India CEO Forum and serves on the Board of Governors of the New York Academy of Sciences. He is also an international member of the United States National Academy of Engineering (NAE) and a member of the UTokyo Global Navigation Board. His advisory roles extend to the Mitsubishi International Advisory Committee and the International Advisory Council of Singapore’s Economic Development Board.

Leadership in Education and Sustainability

N Chandrasekaran is committed to education and sustainability. He is the Chairman of the Indian Institute of Management, Lucknow, and the President of the Court at the Indian Institute of Science, Bengaluru. He is also a member of the Stanford Doer School for Sustainability Advisory Council and the MIT CEO Advisory Board.

His book, “Bridgital Nation,” explores how technological disruptions can be harnessed to bring Indians closer to their aspirations.
