Diwali, the spectacular Festival of Lights, commences with the deeply auspicious celebration of Dhanteras, also known as Dhanatrayodashi. Observed on the thirteenth day (Trayodashi Tithi) of the dark fortnight of the Kartik month, this festival marks the spiritual and ceremonial opening of the five-day Deepawali period. Dhanteras is fundamentally a day dedicated to the invocation and celebration of wealth, health, and prosperity. Devotees honor three key deities: Goddess Lakshmi, the primary goddess of wealth and fortune; Lord Kubera, the divine treasurer; and Lord Dhanvantari, the god of health and Ayurveda, who is believed to have emerged from the ocean during the Samudra Manthan carrying the pot of Amrita (elixir of immortality).

The core ritual of Dhanteras revolves around welcoming affluence into the home. It is considered profoundly lucky and customary for people to purchase new items, especially precious metals like gold and silver, or new utensils, symbolizing the accumulation of wealth for the coming year. Homes are meticulously cleaned, decorated, and illuminated with diyas (earthen lamps) to ward off negativity and light the path for Goddess Lakshmi’s arrival. Furthermore, the tradition of Yama Deepam involves lighting a lamp outside the main entrance to honor Lord Yama (the god of death), praying for protection and the prevention of untimely demise, thereby establishing a foundation of well-being before the grand celebrations of Diwali begin.

Happy Dhanteras date and time

This year, Dhanteras falls on Saturday, October 18, 2025, marking the beginning of the five-day Diwali festivities. The muhurat (auspicious time) for Dhanteras puja is determined by the Pradosh Kaal and Vrishabha Kaal, and performing the rituals during these hours is considered highly beneficial for inviting wealth and prosperity. The general Dhanteras Puja Muhurat is from 07:16 PM to 08:20 PM on October 18, 2025, a period considered ideal for performing the evening rituals and seeking divine blessings from Goddess Lakshmi, Lord Kubera, and Lord Dhanvantari.

Happy Dhanteras Puja Vidhi: A Step-by-Step Guide

The Dhanteras puja is a simple yet sacred ritual that is performed to invoke the blessings of Lord Dhanvantari, the god of Ayurveda, and Goddess Lakshmi, the goddess of wealth and prosperity. Here’s a step-by-step guide to performing the Dhanteras puja:

1) Preparation: Cleanse the puja area and arrange all the necessary items, including a kalash (pot), coconut, betel leaves, rice, kumkum (vermilion), camphor, incense sticks, Indian sweets and dry fruits for prasad (offering), and a diya (earthen lamp).

2) Invocation: Light the diya and recite the Gayatri Mantra or any other devotional hymn to invoke the divine presence.

3) Panchamrita Snana: Prepare the panchamrita, a mixture of five sacred nectars – milk, curd, ghee, honey, and sugar. Bathe the idols of Lord Dhanvantari and Goddess Lakshmi with this panchamrita.

4) Shodasha Upacara Puja: Perform the shodasha upacara puja, which involves offering 16 items to the deities, including flowers, fruits, sweets, and clothes.

5) Arati: Perform the arati ceremony, waving a lighted lamp around the idols while chanting religious hymns.

6) Prasad: Distribute the prasad to all family members and guests.

7) Dhanvantari Mantra: Recite the Dhanvantari mantra to seek the blessings of good health and prosperity:

“Om Dhanvantaryaye Namah”

8) Lakshmi Mantra: Recite the Lakshmi mantra to invoke the blessings of wealth and abundance:

“Om Shrim Lakshmiye Namah”

Happy Dhanteras: Shubh Muhurat for Dhanteras puja

The Shubh Muhurat (auspicious time) for Dhanteras Puja in 2025 is on Saturday, October 18, between 07:16 PM and 08:20 PM. This evening period is considered ideal for performing the rituals, believed to bring enhanced blessings of health, wealth, and prosperity into the home from Goddess Lakshmi and Lord Dhanvantari.

Happy Dhanteras Muhurat to buy gold and silver

Buying gold and silver items on Dhanteras is considered to be very auspicious and beneficial. It is believed that these items bring wealth, happiness, and protection to the family. The Shubh Muhurat to buy gold and silver on Dhanteras 2025 falls on Saturday, October 18.

The most auspicious times for making these purchases are:

  • Pradosh Kaal Muhurat (Evening Puja Time): 07:16 PM to 08:20 PM
  • Morning Muhurat (Choghadiya): 07:51 AM to 09:17 AM (Shubha Choghadiya)
  • Afternoon Muhurat (Choghadiya): 03:00 PM to 04:26 PM (Labha Choghadiya)

Purchasing gold or silver during these times is considered highly favorable and is believed to bring good fortune, prosperity, and wealth into the household for the upcoming year. However, you can also buy these items anytime during the day or night as per your convenience and budget.

Happy Dhanteras Mantra

The mantra or the sacred chant for Dhanteras is as follows:

> Om Shreem Hreem Kleem Mahalakshmyai Namaha!

अमृतकलश हस्ताय सर्वभय विनाशाय सर्वरोगनिवारणाय । श्री धन्वंतरी स्वरूप श्री श्री श्री औषधचक्र नारायणाय नमः ।। * ॐ धन्वंतरये नमः ।।

This mantra is dedicated to Goddess Lakshmi and is said to attract wealth, abundance, and prosperity. One can recite this mantra 108 times on Dhanteras while holding a rosary or a mala in their hand. Alternatively, one can also listen to this mantra on a loop or play it in the background while performing the puja or buying the gold and silver items.
