BHUBANEWSWAR: An ambitious woman who lost her husband in a road mishap, wanted to stand up on her own feet and educate her son, but money was big barrier on her way. GMR Kamalanga Energy Limited (GKEL) came forward and extended financial support with proper guidance to Gitanjali to open a grocery shop in Mangalpur Village in Dhenkanal district. Today, she is very happy and earns more than Rs 3000 every month.

indi-csr-award-ad-300x400She never thought of living a life that she has today. She always had a desire to be self-reliant and venture out on her own. What she lacked was the initial pluck and the know-how to take charge of her destiny. “Thanks to GKEL for extending helping hand to me. I strongly feel it is my responsibility to show others the right way to go ahead with their dreams,” she said. Gitanjali has become a source of inspiration for other women waiting in the wings to grow under the Livelihood Restoration Program (LRP), launched by GMR Kamalanga Energy Limited.

GKEL, which operates 1050 MW coal-fired power plant in Dhenkanal district, launched a livelihood restoration pilot project in Mangalpur Panchayat with an aim to boost income to the project affected families through agri-based activity, employable skill training and micro-enterprises support initiative. The LRP is being implemented in a very intensive and integrated manner in the project area for three years for the benefit of 1500 project affected families.

The project affected family member -Sridhar Behera and Madhab Bhoi have scripted success story by availing the benefit under LRP. While Sridhar is earning not less than Rs 300 per day by selling bangles, Madhab from Barasahi Village is earning more than Rs 1500 per week from its mini commercial vehicle. GKEL’s LRP has become a game changer in lives of Mangalpur Panchayat men and women who have the spark in them to do something new in life.
