An in-depth look at Dabur India’s 2024-25 CSR report, detailing how the FMCG giant invested over Rs 37 crores in community development, healthcare, education, and environmental sustainability, transforming millions of lives across India.

NEW DELHI (India CSR): In a world where corporate success is increasingly measured by societal impact, Dabur India Limited stands as a beacon of purpose-driven business. Rooted in the vision of its founder, Dr. S. K. Burman, who believed, “What is that life worth which cannot bring comfort to others,” Dabur has long championed social responsibility. In the financial year 2024-25, the company invested Rs 37.27 crores in Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiatives, directly impacting 3.61 million lives across 221 districts in India. This investment, guided by a commitment to health, wellness, and sustainability, reflects Dabur’s ethos of fostering inclusive growth and empowering marginalized communities.

Strategic Framework for Social Impact

Dabur’s CSR initiatives are underpinned by a well-structured governance model, ensuring alignment with its mission to create self-reliant communities. The CSR Committee, chaired by Dr. Ajay Dua, oversees strategic planning and compliance with the Companies Act, 2013. Implementation is executed through trusted entities like Jivanti Welfare and Charitable Trust (JWCT) and Sustainable Development Society (SUNDESH), in partnership with reputable NGOs.

For FY 2024-25, Dabur’s CSR obligation, calculated as 2% of its average net profit over the past three years, amounted to Rs 35.50 crores. The company surpassed this mandate, allocating Rs 37.27 crores to diverse programs, with a focus on healthcare, poverty alleviation, education, environmental sustainability, and women’s empowerment. This excess spending underscores Dabur’s proactive approach to exceeding statutory requirements, a trend consistent since it began reporting CSR expenditure in 2012-13.

Core Pillars of CSR Investment

Dabur’s CSR strategy is built around five key thematic areas, each addressing critical societal needs and delivering measurable outcomes. In FY 2024-25, these initiatives reached 36,12,308 beneficiaries across rural and urban India.

1. Eradicating Hunger, Poverty, and Malnutrition

With 19,60,742 beneficiaries, this pillar addresses food insecurity and nutritional deficiencies. The flagship Mission Aahaar program supplemented mid-day meals in government schools, ensuring children receive balanced nutrition. Additional efforts included providing food and nutrition supplements to underserved communities, significantly reducing malnutrition in targeted regions.

2. Promoting Healthcare

Healthcare initiatives reached 14,20,191 individuals, emphasizing primary and preventive care. Programs like Swasthya Chetna Abhiyan and Samajhdar Maa, Swastha Bacha focused on maternal and child wellness, organizing health camps and awareness drives. Dabur also supported sanitation efforts, constructing toilets in rural households and schools to improve hygiene standards.

3. Ensuring Environmental Sustainability

Environmental programs impacted 1,67,626 people through initiatives like water conservation, sustainable agriculture, and renewable energy adoption. The Desert Bloom project, detailed below, was a cornerstone of this effort, while programs promoting solar power and biodiversity conservation furthered Dabur’s green agenda.

4. Livelihood and Women’s Empowerment

Skill-building initiatives empowered 19,404 women and rural youth, fostering financial independence. Programs like Bee the Change trained individuals in scientific beekeeping, providing bee-boxes to establish micro-enterprises, while Herbal Kingdom supported farmers in sustainable cultivation.

5. Promotion of Education

Education initiatives benefited 8,465 students by improving school infrastructure and access to digital literacy. The Adarsh Pathshala program transformed government schools into modern learning environments, enhancing educational outcomes for underserved children.

Flagship Initiatives Driving Change

Dabur’s CSR portfolio in 2024-25 included several high-impact projects, each tailored to address specific community needs.

1. Desert Bloom: Reviving Water Resources

The Desert Bloom initiative tackled water scarcity in arid regions, reviving and constructing 20 water bodies across six states, including Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, and Assam. This effort increased water replenishment capacity by 353% compared to the previous year, creating a capacity of 9,44,697 kilolitres and benefiting 24,137 people. This project has advanced Dabur’s goal of becoming water-positive by 2030, achieving 86% of its target well ahead of schedule.

2. Adarsh Pathshala: Transforming Education

The Adarsh Pathshala program modernized 17 government schools across seven states, benefiting 7,209 students. By upgrading classrooms, installing sanitation and drinking water facilities, and providing computer labs, Dabur created vibrant learning spaces that inspire academic excellence and digital literacy.

3. Herbal Kingdom and Bee the Change: Empowering Rural Livelihoods

The Herbal Kingdom initiative engaged 12,753 farmers in cultivating medicinal and aromatic plants across 13,191 acres, boosting household incomes by up to 50%. Similarly, Bee the Change trained 17,141 individuals in scientific beekeeping, equipping them with tools to establish sustainable micro-enterprises. These programs not only promote economic self-reliance but also contribute to ecological balance.

4. My 10 Kg Plastic: Pioneering Waste Management

Dabur’s My 10 Kg Plastic initiative solidified its status as India’s first plastic waste-positive FMCG company. By mobilizing 70,500 households to segregate waste at the source, the program enhanced recycling efforts. The Asha Ki Kiran sub-initiative supported waste collectors’ children with education, while providing healthcare and safety gear to workers. An impact assessment revealed that 80% of participants now segregate plastic waste, and 70% reported increased incomes.

Community-Centric Approach

Dabur’s CSR philosophy emphasizes participatory development, ensuring initiatives are sustainable and community-driven. Before launching projects, Dabur conducts focus group discussions and needs assessments to align interventions with local priorities. This collaborative approach, involving community members and local NGOs, ensures cultural sensitivity and long-term impact. For instance, households contribute nominally to sanitation projects, fostering a sense of ownership and responsibility.

Financial Commitment and Compliance

Dabur’s CSR expenditure of Rs 37.27 crores in FY 2024-25 included Rs 1.77 crores in administrative overheads, with the remaining funds directly supporting program implementation. The company’s consistent practice of exceeding its mandatory CSR budget—set at 2% of average net profits—reflects its dedication to societal value creation. This aligns with the Companies Act, 2013, and is monitored through quarterly progress reviews by the CSR Committee.

You Learn: A Vision for Inclusive Growth

Dabur’s CSR roadmap for the future focuses on scaling high-impact programs while deepening partnerships with state governments and NGOs. The company aims to expand its footprint in education, healthcare, and environmental sustainability, with a particular emphasis on empowering women and youth. By integrating economic development with ecological responsibility, Dabur is poised to continue its legacy of meaningful change.

A Legacy of Impact

Dabur’s Rs 37.27 crore investment in FY 2024-25 is more than a financial milestone; it’s a testament to a 140-year legacy of trust and purpose. From reviving water bodies to educating children and empowering farmers, Dabur’s initiatives have touched millions of lives, building a more inclusive and sustainable India. As the company continues to innovate and invest in communities, it remains a shining example of how businesses can drive positive change while staying true to their roots.
