A deeply personal milestone for Vedanta Group’s Chairman, Anil Agarwal as the movement enters his home state

Patna, Bihar (India CSR):  In a landmark step towards strengthening India’s early childhood development ecosystem, Nand Ghar, Vedanta’s flagship social impact project under the Anil Agarwal Foundation, today signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Department of Women and Child Development, Government of Bihar, to transform 1,000 existing Anganwadis into modern Nand Ghars across the state which will impact nearly 1,00,000 children, women & community members in the state.

Each Nand Ghar is designed as a state-of-the-art, holistic development centre equipped with smart learning tools, child-friendly infrastructure, clean drinking water, hygienic sanitation facilities and space for women-led skilling and community engagement. Beyond infrastructure, the centres serve as catalysts for social transformation by delivering quality pre-school education, improved nutrition, primary healthcare services and sustainable livelihood opportunities for rural women.

The initiative aligns closely with the Government of India’s vision of strengthening the Anganwadi ecosystem under Saksham Anganwadi and POSHAN 2.0, while complementing Bihar’s commitment to improving nutrition, early childhood education, healthcare access and women’s empowerment.

The MoU marks a historic milestone as Vedanta officially enters Bihar through its flagship social impact initiative, Nand Ghar. As the 18th state to join the Nand Ghar movement, Bihar will now become part of one of India’s largest public-private partnerships dedicated to strengthening the Anganwadi ecosystem and empowering women and children through technology-enabled, holistic centres.

For Vedanta Chairman Shri Anil Agarwal, the expansion into Bihar represents far more than an organisational milestone, it is the fulfilment of a deeply cherished personal aspiration. Brought up in Bihar, Mr. Agarwal has often spoken about the values of resilience, determination and community that shaped his early years. Bringing the Nand Ghar movement to his home state reflects his enduring commitment to ensuring that every child, irrespective of geography, receives the opportunities needed to build a brighter future.

Speaking on the occasion, Anil Agarwal, Chairman, Vedanta, said, “Bihar has always held a special place in my heart, and it gives me immense joy to see the Nand Ghar movement begin its journey here. It is written in our ancient scriptures that the sanskar and shiksha given to a child up to the age of 6 makes a lifelong impact. Thousands of children of this age group from across the state will now have access to better nutrition, joyful learning and brighter opportunities, while women will find new pathways to become financially independent and build a better future for their families. I extend my heartfelt gratitude to Hon’ble Chief Minister Shri Samrat Choudhary ji for his continued support towards initiatives that create meaningful impact at the grassroots. Together with the Government of Bihar, I invite everyone to join this Nand Ghar movement.”

With this partnership, Bihar becomes the 18th state to join the Nand Ghar movement, which today spans around 15,000 centers across 17 states in India and has emerged as one of the country’s largest public-private partnerships for strengthening the Anganwadi ecosystem.

The expansion into Bihar further reinforces Nand Ghar’s long-term vision of reimagining India’s Anganwadi ecosystem and building a future where every child is healthy, every mother is empowered and every village has the foundation to prosper.

Present at the signing, Dr. Shweta Gupta,  Minister of Social Welfare in the Government of Bihar said, “The Government of Bihar is committed to ensuring that every child receives the best possible start in life and every woman has access to opportunities that strengthen her social and economic well-being. Our partnership with Nand Ghar reflects this shared vision. The transformation of 1,000 Anganwadi Centres into modern Nand Ghars will significantly strengthen service delivery at the grassroots and create holistic spaces for learning, nutrition, health and community development. We look forward to working together to create lasting impact for families across Bihar.”

As Nand Ghar begins its journey in Bihar, it brings with it far more than modern infrastructure, it brings the promise of opportunity, dignity and hope. Built on a shared vision between the Government of Bihar and Vedanta, this partnership seeks to nurture healthier children, empower confident women and strengthen communities from the grassroots. Because when an Anganwadi transforms into a Nand Ghar, it doesn’t just change a building, it changes the future of an entire village.
