NEW DELHI: Tata Power has always envisioned that women empowerment is fundamental in driving a country’s socio-economic growth. Dhaaga, is one such initiative by the company that aims to uplift the livelihood of under-privileged community women by making them financially independent.

With an intent to take this initiative to the next level, Tata Power in collaboration with TPDDL today launched its first Dhaaga store in Delhi. This Dhaaga store is not only honors and celebrates the craftsmanship of these women, it also provides them a platform to showcase their talent and secure their future.

This store will have a special display and selling unit of handicrafts such as jute bags, soft toys, apparels, bangles, paper cups etc. made by the SHGs and Dhaaga women. The earnings from the sales at this unit will be directed towards these women, propelling them on the path of self-reliance and financial independence.

The inauguration event was graced by Shalini Singh, women from the Self-Help Groups (SHGs), students from Vocational Training centres and employees of Tata Power.

“Tata Power has always worked towards promoting gender equality and empowering women. With the launch of our first Dhaaga store, we aim to give them a platform to become self-reliant and financially independent. Seeing these women blossom into confident individuals, makes us strive harder to create an environment devoid of the inequalities faced by them.” said, Shalini Singh, Chief – Corporate Communications & Sustainability, Tata Power.

In 2017, it started with 15 women in Kamshet village of Pune district where a self-help group (SHG) and a modern garment-making unit was established. Today, Dhaaga has movement expanded to cover 16 locations across Maharashtra, Gujarat, Jharkhand, Tamil Nadu and Odisha.

In 2018–19, about 1,050 women managing an order value of Rs 37 lakh were a part of this programme. Under this initiative, it has also been promoting region specific arts and crafts such as Kutchee handicrafts in Mundra and Tiger Grass Handicrafts in Maithon, Jharkhand.
