Fighting Congenital Heart Defects in India
In India, it’s estimated that over 200,000 children are born with CHDs each year. Of these, more than 70,000 are diagnosed with critical CHD, necessitating specialist medical intervention even before their first birthday. This genetic heart muscle issue can lead to sudden death or progressive heart failure. Regrettably, awareness about genetic cardiomyopathy is minimal among the underprivileged, and early symptoms are often understated, mistaken for typical newborn conditions such as infections or adaptation difficulties to life outside the womb.

Predominantly, pediatric cardiac expertise is concentrated in urban centers, leaving rural pediatricians struggling to diagnose a sick baby with CHD, frequently considering alternative diagnoses.
