NEW DELHI: Randal Newton, vice president of enterprise engineering at Ingersoll Rand, a world leader in creating comfortable, sustainable and efficient environments, joined experts from across the country at the CII 12th Sustainability Summit, held in New Delhi on September 6, 2017.
Joining panelists in the discussion on ‘Tackling Climate Change with Nationally Determined Contributions’, Randal Newton shared insights on the best practices and strategies adopted by Ingersoll Rand to attain sustainable development goals (SDGs).
“Converting national climate plans into reality is a complex and demanding process and requires contributions from everyone – it needs a public-private partnership. Governments and Industries must work together to ensure successful implementation of the Paris Agreement commitments. With India poised to become a major manufacturing hub in the coming years, all players and policy makers in this sector need to align their Make in India goals with green technologies in order to remain competitive in global markets,” Newton said. “We hope to lead our industry towards a more sustainable world through our choices, improving our global operating footprint, and continuing to develop lower greenhouse gas emission options for the benefit of our customers and the environment.”
Ingersoll Rand in 2014 established long-term sustainability targets to address the issues of greatest importance to the company, the environment and the society, including the company’s operational footprint, customer outcomes, and corporate citizenship. By integrating SDGs into its business model, Ingersoll Rand has achieved 23% reduction in GHG intensity since 2013. It has avoided 6.7 million metric tons CO2e since 2013. Ingersoll Rand will introduce products across its industrial and climate portfolio that are significantly more energy and operationally efficient. Two of the company’s brands, Trane and Thermo King, will introduce products over the next five years that use refrigerants with lower global warming potential and fit into the environmental plans, without compromising safety, performance and efficiency.
Ingersoll Rand Climate Commitment
Ingersoll Rand made a commitment to significantly reduce GHG emissions from its products and operations by 2030. The company’s Climate Commitment pledges to:
- Cut the refrigerant GHG footprint of its products by 50 percent by 2020 and incorporate lower global warming potential (GWP) alternatives across its portfolio by 2030;
- Invest $500 million in product-related research and development over the next five years to fund the long-term reduction of GHG emissions; and
- Reduce company operations-related GHG emissions by 35 percent by 2020.
To date, the commitment has supported the avoidance of approximately 6.7 million metric tons of CO2e globally, which is the equivalent of avoiding annual CO2 emissions from energy used in more than 700,000 homes. In support of the commitment, Ingersoll Rand launched Eco-Wise, a portfolio of products designed to lower environmental impact with next generation, low-global warming potential refrigerants and high efficiency operation. By 2030, the company expects to reduce its carbon footprint by 50 million metric tons.
