PUNE: Institute for Prostate Cancer (IPC), a unique initiative in the healthcare sector, by the Kalyani Group organized a three day workshop and panel discussion to spread awareness on Prostate Cancer. The workshop witnessed Dr. Ashutosh Tewari, leading Uro oncologist highlighting the advanced techniques developed in the diagnosis of prostate cancer.
The event brought together renowned oncologists from cities like Pune, Coimbatore and Mumbai. At the panel discussion, Dr. Shona Nag, Dr. Balchandra Kashyapi, Dr. Deepak Kirpekar, Dr. Shivdeo Bapat, Dr. Jagdeesh Kulkarni etc shared their knowledge and experience in all facets of diagnosis and treatment of prostate cancer.
In India, prostate cancer incidences are rising and are projected to be about 50000 cases in the next 5 years. Prostate cancer occurs mainly in older men of age above 50 years and the average age at the time of diagnosis is 66 years. Men have significantly worse health outcomes compared to women, much of it due to lifestyle factors. About 6 cases in 10 are diagnosed in men aged 65 or older. The delay in the diagnosis of this cancer makes it extremely difficult for its treatment. This workshop was an attempt to improve standards of prostate cancer care throughout the region for the benefit of patients and their caregivers.
In the panel discussion Dr. Tewari, Chairman of Urology at the Icahn School of Medicine in New York said: “With increase in life expectancy, adoption of newer lifestyles, the incidence of prostate cancer is on rise. Globally, prostate cancer is the second most frequently diagnosed cancer and sixth leading cause of cancer death in men. Spreading awareness on prostate cancer is very important and the early detection of the disease will help avoid fatalities”
“This panel discussion has been a great forum to bring in knowledge, experiences and discuss critical cases from renowned oncologists” added the pioneer in Robotic Prostatectomy.
At IPC, Dr. Tewari demonstrated and elaborated on the use and importance of the new MRI Fusion Biopsy machine. This machine is an innovation in the field of medicine for accurate diagnosis of prostate cancer. Dr. Tewari also discussed his operative videos on surgical treatment of prostate cancer with other doctors present at the workshop.
On this occasion Mrs. Sunita Kalyani, Director, IPC said, “Our aim is to bring together researchers, academicians and scientists from the Prostate Cancer community and to create a platform for robust exchange of information on technological advances, new scientific developments, and the effectiveness of various programs towards Prostate cancer. The urologists and allied health professionals said that the effect of maintaining body weight, regular physical activity and controlled diet will help men to take better control of their future health.
