KANPUR: The city got its first eco-toilet on Friday. Installed near RTO office in Sarvodaya Nagar, the fully automatic e-toilet was inaugurated by district magistrate Roshan Jacob. The basic necessity was installed under the ‘Vision Kanpur’ policy of district administration for the integrated development of the city.
The e-toilets that are designed to be unmanned, self-cleaning, and smart toilets have a facility of automatic flushing once used, have in-built water tanks, sensors for water and electricity conservation, automatic platform cleaning, and power back-up. “We are trying to bridge the gap between the city corporates and administration. The e-toilet has been installed under our `Vision Kanpur’ policy. We are trying to promote Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) of big entrepreneurs. We are also working on many more projects that will contribute in the development of the city,” said district magistrate Roshan Jacob.
Shedding light on the working of the machine, an official from the sponsored company said that the door of the e-toilet opens only on insertion of a one-rupee coin by the user. The insertion of the coin witches on a light–—thus saving energy—and even directs the person with audio commands. The toilets are programmed to flush 1.5 litre of water after 3 minutes of usage or 4.5 litre if the usage is longer. It can also be programmed to clean the platform with a complete wash down after every 5 or 10 persons use the toilet.
The locals seem to be excited about the new facility in the city. E-toilet is changing the way of public sanitation works. “The present problems of sanitation in the city are not because of the dearth of toilets. However, lack of maintenance and requirement for manual cleaning has made them dysfunctional. E-toilets could prove to be a hit among the locals. The administration should install a few more e-toilets,” said Rashmi Gupta, a school teacher.
Ditto was the case with Nandini Agarwal, who also appreciated the initiative by the corporates and district administration. “It is a great initiative by the district administration and by the private company under CSR. Public toilets are a very essential part of the city’s development. Starting from one, we need to have more e-toilets in the city. Since they are automatic, it will save man power and energy,” she said.
