NEW DELHI: Mahindru Foundation and Niramaya Charitable Trust organised an eye camp at a village in Rajokri drawing huge response from the locals who not just got themselves checked and treated but also pledged their eyes for donation.
More than 400 people were attended to by specialist doctors and provided free medicines for their eye ailments, while those detected with cataract were registered for free corrective operations to be conducted subsequently.
The highlight of the event was close to 80 people pledging their eyes for donation after being counselled by Mahindru Foundation volunteers and doctors from Niramaya Charitable Trust and Y P Mahindru Eye Bank Chairman.
“To donate eyes is the most noble gesture a human being can do for a fellow human being. This is the message we try and convey at such camps because people tend to be ignorant about eye care until and unless faced with a major ailment,” said Mr Ashok Mahindru, whose father Yashpal Mahindru founded the Y.P.Mahindru Niramaya Eye Bank many years ago.
“We have organised several such camps in the past and the response has always been overwhelming and today was no different,” Chief Executive of Mahindru Foundation Mr Vishnu Bhargava added.
India is home to more than 2.5 million of the world’s corneal blind but the actual number of eye donation is a meagre 30000 to 40000 per year. The huge gap can be brought down significantly by creating awareness and through higher eye donations.
The Y P Mahindru Eye Bank has had more than 1200 eye donations till date which has helped light up the lives and brings vision to thousands. We are committed to making people aware about the noble cause.
