Airbnb’s new automatic donation model is expected to provide US$500 million to Airbnb.org over five years, supporting a goal of one million free housing nights annually.
NEW DELHI (India CSR): Every eligible home stay booked on Airbnb will now contribute towards helping people find temporary housing during moments of crisis. Airbnb has announced that it will donate US$0.10 from its revenue for every eligible stay to Airbnb.org, the independent nonprofit that provides free, temporary accommodation to people affected by disasters and other difficult circumstances, the company said.
The new funding model is expected to provide US$500 million to Airbnb.org over the next five years. The company said the funding will put Airbnb (dot) org g on a path to provide one million nights of free housing annually, while expanding its support for families travelling for medical care, survivors fleeing domestic violence and exploitation, and veterans undergoing serious medical treatment.
The initiative marks a significant evolution in how a global travel and hospitality platform can connect its core business activity with social impact. Unlike a conventional opt-in donation campaign, the model is linked automatically to every eligible booking. Guests will not pay more, hosts will not receive lower payouts, and neither group is required to take any additional action.
For Airbnb, the approach seeks to make every stay contribute in a small but meaningful way towards emergency and humanitarian housing support.

From One Host’s Gesture to a Global Housing Network
The story of Airbnb (dot) org began in 2012, when Hurricane Sandy displaced thousands of people across the United States. In response, an Airbnb host opened her home to people who had nowhere to stay. Other hosts followed, demonstrating how temporary accommodation could become an immediate source of support during a disaster.
That community-led response eventually inspired the creation of Airbnb.org as an independent nonprofit in 2020. Since then, Airbnb.org has provided more than 1.6 million nights of free housing to over 250,000 people around the world.
Brian Chesky, Co-founder and CEO of Airbnb, said the new model carries forward the same spirit of generosity that began with a single host’s decision to help people displaced by Hurricane Sandy.
“Fourteen years ago, after Hurricane Sandy hit, one host opened her home to people who had nowhere else to go. That simple act of generosity grew into Airbnb.org,” Chesky said. “Now, every time someone books a home on Airbnb, they’ll help someone else find a place to stay when they need it most.”
The new commitment is significant because housing is often among the first and most urgent needs during a crisis. A safe place to stay can provide families with stability, privacy, access to work, medical care, schools and local support systems at a time when their usual lives have been disrupted.

Scaling Support Beyond Disaster Response
Airbnb (dot) org ’s work has expanded rapidly in recent years. According to Airbnb, the nonprofit has provided free temporary housing in response to more than 200 disasters this year, compared with eight disasters in 2023.
The growing number of disasters and emergencies has increased the need for flexible housing solutions. Natural disasters, displacement, conflict, medical emergencies and family crises can leave people without a secure place to stay for days, weeks or longer. Airbnb.org works with nonprofit organisations and government partners to identify people who need immediate housing support.
The new funding model will allow the organisation to expand beyond disaster response and support people facing other forms of crisis.
One important focus area will be families travelling for medical care. By the end of 2026, Airbnb.org expects to support such families in more than 20 countries. The programme will work with organisations including the Leukaemia Foundation of Australia, Instituto Beaba in Brazil, B.C. Friends of Children in Canada, Fundación Xana in Spain and Children’s Miracle Network in the United States.
For families managing serious illness, the cost and challenge of travelling for treatment can extend far beyond hospital bills. Accommodation near a hospital or specialist treatment centre can become a major burden, particularly when medical care requires repeated visits or long stays. Free, temporary housing can help families remain close to loved ones while reducing one element of financial and emotional stress.
Airbnb.org will also introduce a programme to provide free temporary stays for survivors of domestic violence and exploitation. The programme is expected to support people who have left unsafe situations and are rebuilding their lives. It will work with partners including Peace House in Utah.
Safe accommodation can be a critical requirement for survivors seeking to leave abusive or exploitative environments. A temporary home can offer time, safety and dignity while survivors access legal, social, financial and emotional support.
In the United States, Airbnb.org is also expanding support for veterans facing serious illness or undergoing intensive treatment. The work will include partnerships with Fisher House Foundation, Dream Foundation and Operation Healing Forces.

How Airbnb Housing Support Works
Airbnb dot org is an independent nonprofit that provides people in crisis with free, temporary housing. It works with local nonprofits and government partners, which identify individuals and families requiring support.
Once eligible guests are identified, Airbnb (dot) org provides credits that allow them to book a suitable Airbnb home. This flexibility can be important because each family’s needs are different. Some may need to remain close to relatives, bring pets, access an accessible property, stay near a hospital or find enough space for children and caregivers.
Guests supported through Airbnb.org stay free of cost, while hosts are paid for the stay. Hosts can also voluntarily support the initiative by offering discounted stays or donating part of their Airbnb earnings.
Airbnb covers Airbnb (dot) org ’s operating costs, allowing 100 per cent of public donations to go directly towards free housing for people in need. The company has also clarified that Airbnb does not make money from Airbnb.org stays.
The newly announced US$0.10 donation will apply to eligible home stays. Donations will not be made for stays cancelled before check-in or for bookings of Airbnb Experiences and Services.

A Built-In Social Impact Model
The most distinctive feature of this initiative is that it makes social impact a built-in part of Airbnb’s booking ecosystem. Rather than relying only on one-time donations or emergency fundraising drives, the model connects a small contribution from every eligible stay with an ongoing pool of funding for crisis housing.
The company has said that the model will not affect guest pricing or host payouts. This ensures that participation is automatic while preserving the financial terms for both sides of the Airbnb marketplace.
The funding commitment and the target of one million annual free housing nights are forward-looking goals. Their achievement will depend on booking volumes, programme implementation, partnerships and the ability of Airbnb.org to expand support across different regions and crisis situations.
However, the direction is clear: Airbnb is seeking to institutionalise a long-term funding stream for temporary housing at a time when the need for flexible accommodation is growing across the world.
For people displaced by floods, storms, conflict, unsafe homes, medical emergencies or other crises, a temporary place to stay can be far more than shelter. It can be the foundation from which families begin to recover.
