For decades, Garhwali and Kumaoni language are spoken among courtyards, folk songs, and phone calls — but almost never on a news screen. Khabar Uttarakhand, one of the state’s most trusted digital news platform, launched its new mobile app on Google Play Store and Apple Store, bringing dedicated news videos in Garhwali and Kumaoni on mobile app for the first time on this scale.

The app, built by a team rooted in the hills of Uttarakhand, positions itself as more than just another news aggregator. It is a homegrown answer to a question the state’s 1.2 crore residents — and lakhs more living outside the state — have been asking for years: why does Uttarakhand news always come filtered through Delhi’s lens?

“People haven’t stopped caring about news — they’ve stopped tolerating clutter,” said Basant Nigam, Managing Director of Time Media Productions, the parent company behind Khabar Uttarakhand. “A student in Dehradun, a shopkeeper in Haldwani, a soldier’s family in Pithoragarh — they all want to know what’s happening in their state, but nobody has twenty minutes for it. Fata Fat gives them the whole picture in the time it takes to sip their chai. That’s not dumbing the news down. That’s respecting the reader’s time.”

What Makes the App Different

Khabar Garhwal & Khabar Kumaon — Dedicated video segment delivering news and stories from the Garhwal region in Garhwali and the Kumaon region in Kumaoni. In an era where regional languages are disappearing from digital spaces, Khabar Uttarakhand is putting them at the centre of its product — a move aimed squarely at preserving pahadi identity while keeping communities informed.

Fata Fat ( News in 60 Words ) — For readers who want the day’s Uttarakhand news without the jargon, Fata Fat delivers crisp 60-word summaries across politics, crime, culture, and more. Read the whole state’s headlines in the time it takes to drink half a cup of chai.

Shorts — News in a reels-style vertical video format, built for how people actually consume content in 2026. Swipe through ground reports, breaking updates, and stories from the hills.

Category News — Podcasts, bulletins, politics, crime, and human-interest stories from across Uttarakhand, organised so users find exactly what they care about.

Bookmarks — Save favourite videos and articles to revisit anytime.

A Newsroom the Hills Can Trust

Behind the app is a newsroom of 50+ experienced journalists, editors, and creators, many reporting from the ground in districts that national media rarely reaches. Khabar Uttarakhand is a trademark-registered brand and is accredited in the A Category by the Government of Uttarakhand — a recognition of its credibility and professional standards in journalism.

The platform has built its reputation on factual reporting, balanced perspectives, and accountability — covering everything from breaking news and political developments to environmental challenges, cultural narratives, and inspiring stories from remote villages. It also plays an active role in spreading awareness about government welfare schemes, ensuring citizens across the state know about policies and opportunities meant for them.

“Trust is our only real product,” Basant Nigam added. “Whether it’s election coverage, a landslide alert, or a scheme that can change a farmer’s life — when people in Uttarakhand open our app, they should know what they’re reading is accurate, verified, and reported by someone who understands this land.”

Why It Matters

Uttarakhand’s digital news space has long been dominated by national outlets that treat the state as an afterthought — a headline during elections or disasters, silence the rest of the year. Khabar Uttarakhand’s app flips that model: hyperlocal coverage, regional languages, and formats designed for everyone from a college student in Dehradun to a retired fauji in a Kumaon village to the pahadi diaspora in Delhi, Mumbai, and abroad.

For the lakhs of Uttarakhandis living outside the state, the app is being pitched as a daily bridge home — Garhwali and Kumaoni stories, hill politics, and local updates, all in one place.
