The restoration nearly doubles the lake’s storage capacity from 150 million litres to 300 million litres, strengthening flood resilience, groundwater recharge and biodiversity.

CHENNAI (India CSR): Infosys, in collaboration with environmental conservation organisation Siruthuli, has inaugurated the rejuvenated Thangal Lake in Sholinganallur, Chennai, as part of its corporate social responsibility initiative.

The project, supported through a CSR grant of over Rs 5 crore from Infosys, has nearly doubled the lake’s water storage capacity from about 150 million litres to nearly 300 million litres.

The inauguration was attended by ECR P Saravanan, Member of the Legislative Assembly from Sholinganallur constituency; Aftab Rasool, IAS, Regional Deputy Commissioner (South), Greater Chennai Corporation; Anil Kumar P N, Senior Vice President and Centre Head, Chennai, Infosys; and Niladri Prasad Mishra, Senior Vice President and Head of Global Infrastructure, Infosys, along with other dignitaries.

The lake rejuvenation project is aimed at improving water security, supporting groundwater recharge, strengthening flood resilience, restoring biodiversity, and creating a sustainable community space for local residents.

According to the company, the initiative reflects Infosys’ ongoing commitment to environmental sustainability through ecosystem restoration and nature-based solutions.

The restoration work included deweeding, desilting, strengthening of bunds, sewage diversion, lagoon and island development, creation of floating wetlands, plantation, fencing, and other ecological interventions.

These measures are expected to improve water quality, restore ecological balance, and enhance the overall health of the lake ecosystem.

The project also focused on biodiversity enhancement through the creation of bird habitats, planting of fruit-bearing trees, erosion-control measures, and natural treatment systems.

In addition to ecological restoration, the rejuvenated lake has been developed as a community-friendly public space. Walking pathways, seating areas, a children’s play area, an outdoor gym, and solar-powered lighting have been created to improve public access and encourage community engagement.

The Thangal Lake rejuvenation project addresses key urban environmental challenges, including water pollution, flooding risks, habitat degradation, and declining water retention capacity in rapidly growing city areas.

Siruthuli is a not-for-profit organisation working in the areas of environmental conservation and water body restoration.

The initiative is expected to create long-term value for the local community while contributing to Chennai’s urban sustainability and climate resilience efforts.
