The company said the consolidation of 29 central labour laws into four labour codes represents a significant reform.
MUMBAI (India CSR): Eternal Ltd (formerly known as Zomato Ltd) has said that it welcomes the Government of India’s move to implement the Code on Social Security, 2020, terming it a significant reform aimed at simplifying and modernising the country’s labour framework.
In a statement filed voluntarily with stock exchanges, the company said the Code consolidates 29 central labour laws into four labour codes, providing clearer and more uniform rules that will benefit both businesses and workers.
“One of these four labour codes — the Code on Social Security, 2020 (CoSS) — helps strengthen social security access for gig workers across the country, including those who power our Zomato and Blinkit businesses,” the company said.
The Gurugram-based firm noted that a unified, nationwide framework will bring uniformity for gig workers while improving the ease of doing business for digital platforms.
“At Eternal, we are deeply committed to the wellbeing of gig workers and already provide a range of comprehensive insurance and welfare benefits, free of cost. We are committed to supporting measures that further improve outcomes for gig workers and hence welcome this announcement,” it added.
Eternal further stated that the exact financial and operational contours of the Code on Social Security will be known only after the corresponding rules are notified. The company has been engaging with the government over the years and providing inputs throughout the process.
“We don’t think any financial impact on account of these Rules will be detrimental to the long-term health and sustainability of our business. We have been anticipating and planning for these social security-related contributions in our businesses for a while now,” it said.
The company’s statement, signed by Sandhya Sethia, Company Secretary and Compliance Officer, was addressed to the BSE and the National Stock Exchange.
