NEW DELHI (India CSR): Wockhardt Limited Executive Director and CEO of Wockhardt Foundation Dr. Huzaifa Khorakiwala, a respected voice in global health and peace advocacy, has been appointed Health Advisor to the Prime Minister of Guinea-Bissau, His Excellency Rui Duarte Barros. This appointment recognizes Dr. Khorakiwala’s expertise and highlights India’s emergence as a global powerhouse in public health, digital health innovation, and pharmaceutical manufacturing.
Guinea-Bissau, officially the Republic of Guinea-Bissau, is a West African nation bordering Senegal to the north and Guinea to the south and east, with the Atlantic Ocean to its west. The country also includes the Bijagós Archipelago, an island group located off the coast.
Visionary Leadership Role
Known for his visionary leadership and commitment to social transformation, Dr. Khorakiwala has championed access to healthcare and human dignity for millions. In his new role, he will advise on modernizing healthcare infrastructure, strengthening medicine supply chains, and implementing digital health and telemedicine solutions in Guinea-Bissau. His approach draws from India’s success with scalable health platforms such as Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission, e‑Sanjeevani, CoWIN, and integrated health ID systems.
India’s Health Edge
These digital innovations are underpinned by India’s robust pharmaceutical sector, which now supplies more than 70% of the WHO’s vaccine requirements and approximately 40% of the global generic medicine volume, including 14% of the U.S. generic drug market. This synergy between digital health infrastructure and pharmaceutical capacity has solidified India’s reputation as the “Pharmacy of the World,” offering Guinea-Bissau a powerful model for building a resilient and inclusive healthcare system.
Strategic Collaboration Statement
Commenting on the significance of the collaboration, Dr. Huzaifa Khorakiwala, Executive Director, Wockhardt; CEO, Wockhardt Foundation, and Founder, I Am Peacekeeper Movement, stated, “It is a profound honour to stand alongside Prime Minister Barros and the people of Guinea-Bissau on this enriching journey. By harnessing India’s proven strengths in digital health records, telemedicine, and affordable medicines, we are committed to building a resilient, inclusive healthcare system that leaves no one behind. I eagerly anticipate collaborating with the government and all stakeholders to create a robust health infrastructure that safeguards the well-being of every citizen. Together, drawing on India’s expertise, we can shape a healthier, more equitable future for Guinea-Bissau.”
Humanitarian Impact Legacy
Through his ability to combine strategic insight with a humanitarian approach, he has led transformative programmes through the Wockhardt Foundation, mobile health clinics, sanitation, education, and digital infrastructure, reaching over 200 million people. He will now leverage India’s public health achievements and digital infrastructure to support Guinea-Bissau’s journey toward universal, affordable healthcare.
Sustainable Health Partnership
Through this collaboration, Guinea-Bissau will have an opportunity to gain from India’s proven public-health models, pharmaceutical capacity, and digital systems. Indian-led telemedicine and e-health initiatives, such as the Pan African e-Network, have already delivered specialist consultations and medical education across Africa, including Guinea-Bissau, bridging critical gaps in healthcare access. Additionally, ongoing training programs and capacity-building efforts supported by India are equipping Guinea-Bissau’s health professionals with the skills needed to sustain and expand these advancements for long-term impact.
