Dengue fever is a viral illness spread by bites from infected Aedes aegypti mosquitoes, especially during the rainy season. If not treated quickly, it can cause serious health issues. Common symptoms of dengue include high fever, severe headaches, pain in your joints and muscles, rashes, and mild bleeding. If you have any of these symptoms, it’s important to see a doctor immediately.

Introduction to Dengue Fever: Overview, Causes, and Symptoms

Causes

Dengue fever is caused by a virus that spreads through the bite of infected mosquitoes. The main mosquito responsible is the Aedes aegypti, but other Aedes species can also carry the virus.

Symptoms

Dengue fever often begins suddenly with:

  • High fever up to 104°F or 40°C
  • Severe pain behind the eyes
  • Muscle and joint pain
  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Tiredness and weakness
  • Skin rash
  • Mild bleeding (like nosebleeds, gum bleeding, or easy bruising)

Importance of early diagnosis

Early diagnosis and treatment of dengue fever are vital for several reasons. Swift testing significantly increases the likelihood of a full recovery while minimizing the risk of severe illness. Timely detection can also help prevent complications, such as excessive bleeding or damage to internal organs. Moreover, identifying dengue early helps in controlling its spread by allowing prompt precautions. Once confirmed, healthcare professionals can offer personalized guidance on managing symptoms and preventing further mosquito bites, ensuring both effective treatment and broader prevention efforts.

Role of blood tests, their types, and benefits in diagnosing dengue fever

A dengue fever test analyzes a blood sample to detect the presence of the virus. This test is recommended if an individual exhibits symptoms of dengue fever and have recently been in an area where mosquitos transmit the virus. The type of dengue test used may vary based on the timing of the infection and the onset of symptoms. Diagnostic procedures, including antibody tests, molecular tests and complete blood count help identify the dengue virus, assess the body’s immune response, and evaluate the severity of the illness. These tests include:

  • Antibody Tests are designed to detect specific antibodies like IgM and IgG, which the body produces in response to dengue. The IgM antibody indicates the presence of a recent infection, and IgG suggests past exposure to the virus. These tests determine the timing of the infection and assess the immune response for further treatment decisions.
  • Molecular Tests identify the genetic material of the dengue virus in the blood, indicating the presence of an active infection. The Polymerase Chain Reaction test is a common example. These tests are particularly useful in the early stages of infection, allowing for timely diagnosis and intervention to prevent severe complications.
  • Complete Blood Count (CBC) is a comprehensive blood test that evaluates various components of the blood, including red and white blood cells and platelets. In the context of dengue fever, it is essential for checking platelet counts, which can drop significantly in severe cases. This test also helps identify other signs of anaemia, providing crucial information about the severity of the disease and the patient’s overall health status.
