The rise of digital payments has made transactions seamless but has also created new vulnerabilities. A new scam, known as the ‘Jumped Deposit’ scam, has emerged, targeting Unified Payments Interface (UPI) users across India. The scam manipulates users into authorizing unauthorized withdrawals by exploiting their curiosity and financial habits.

What Is the ‘Jumped Deposit’ Scam?

The ‘Jumped Deposit’ scam is a sophisticated fraud tactic that begins with an unexpected credit to a victim’s bank account via UPI. The deposited amount is usually small—for example, Rs 5,000—designed to lure the victim into checking their balance.

Immediately after the deposit, the scammer initiates a withdrawal request for a significantly larger amount. The victim, upon seeing the unexpected credit, is prompted to open their banking app and enter their personal identification number (PIN) to check their account balance. This action inadvertently approves the scammer’s withdrawal request.

How Does the Scam Work?

  1. Initial Bait: The fraudster sends a small deposit to the victim’s account.
  2. Withdrawal Trigger: The scammer quickly requests a withdrawal of a much larger sum.
  3. Curiosity Trap: The victim, intrigued or confused by the sudden credit, opens their UPI app.
  4. PIN Entry: As soon as the victim enters their PIN, the withdrawal is authorized, and the scammer transfers the larger amount.

According to a statement by The Hindu citing law enforcement officials: “Scammers exploit the recipient’s curiosity over an unsolicited deposit to access their funds.”

Key Steps to Protect Yourself from the ‘Jumped Deposit’ Scam

To safeguard against this type of fraud, experts recommend the following preventive measures:

  1. Wait Before Checking Your Account: Allow at least 15 to 30 minutes before opening your banking app after receiving an unexpected deposit. By doing so, any unauthorized withdrawal requests will expire.
  2. Enter an Incorrect PIN: Intentionally enter an incorrect PIN when checking your balance for the first time. This invalidates any active withdrawal requests linked to your account.

Additionally, any unexpected credit should be verified by contacting your bank to confirm its authenticity.

Why Awareness Is Crucial

The Tamil Nadu Cyber Crime Wing issued a warning about this scam in December 2024 after receiving multiple reports of fraudulent activity. The National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal has also recorded a surge in related complaints.

For victims of this scam, prompt action is essential. Complaints can be lodged at the nearest cybercrime police station or filed online via the National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal.

Additional Safety Tips for UPI Users

  • Enable Transaction Alerts: Ensure that you receive SMS or email alerts for every transaction.
  • Use Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA): Strengthen your security by enabling MFA for banking apps.
  • Avoid Sharing Personal Information: Never share your PIN, OTP, or other sensitive details with anyone.
  • Report Suspicious Activity: Notify your bank immediately if you notice any unusual transactions.

You Learn

The digital revolution has transformed the way we manage money, but it has also opened doors for cybercriminals. Scams like the ‘Jumped Deposit’ are a reminder of the importance of vigilance in financial transactions. By staying informed and adopting proactive safety measures, users can outsmart fraudsters and secure their finances.
