CSR of Coal PSUs

NEW DELHI (India CSR): Throughout the financial year 2023-24, Coal PSUs – Coal India Limited (CIL), Singareni Collieries Company Limited (SCCL), and NLC India Limited (NLCIL) dedicated a robust Rs. 333.54 crores to Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) efforts. These initiatives ranged across various domains including community development, health, environmental sustainability, and education, all aimed at creating lasting societal impacts.

Community Development and Education

Coal PSUs have significantly contributed to educational and community development. The “CCL ke Laal/Laadli” initiative particularly stands out, with ₹3.60 lakhs invested per student over two years, preparing them for prestigious engineering institutes.

The program’s success is evident, with 20 students admitted to IITs and 28 to NITs. Moreover, similar educational initiatives have been adopted by SECL, WCL, and CIL, showcasing a unified strategy to uplift educational standards across underprivileged communities.

Installation of Smart Classes and Construction of Facilities

SCCL, SECL, and NLCIL have been proactive in enhancing educational infrastructure. SECL’s introduction of smart classes in Korba, Raigarh, and Umaria has already shown a positive impact on 782 students by reducing school dropout rates and improving performance. NLCIL’s focus has been on constructing school buildings and library facilities, benefiting over 1,463 students and providing access to educational resources to 10,000 community members.

The CSR initiatives of India’s Coal PSUs in 2023-24 demonstrate a strong commitment to business, societal betterment, and environmental care.

Skill Development Initiatives

In skill development, WCL’s free vocational training programs, in partnership with organizations like CIPET and ATDC, have empowered 985 individuals, enhancing employability in rural regions of Chandrapur, Nagpur, Bhopal, and Chhindwara. ECL’s efforts in operationalizing and upgrading ITI Sikitia have ensured job placements for 515 graduates at major companies like Adani Power and Tata.

Health and Well-Being

The health sector saw substantial contributions from Coal PSUs, with CIL’s Thalassemia Bal Sewa Yojana providing financial aid for 356 bone marrow transplants. NLCIL added value by setting up dialysis centers and establishing 28 medical oxygen plants across various states, enhancing medical infrastructure critical during emergencies.

Empowering Through Sports

CCL’s partnership with the Jharkhand government led to the establishment of “Khelgaon,” a sports academy which has benefitted over 3.24 lakh participants and produced numerous national and international level athletes. This initiative not only fosters sports but also promotes holistic development including education and health for young athletes.

Environmental Sustainability

NLCIL took charge of environmental sustainability projects like the de-silting of Walajah Lake and the widening of Senegal Odai & Middle Paravanar, which improved water availability and benefited over 100 villages. These initiatives demonstrate Coal PSUs’ commitment to maintaining ecological balance and supporting the well-being of future generations.
