Holi 2024: Holi, the vibrant festival of colors, is just around the corner. As we prepare to immerse ourselves in the joyous celebrations, it’s crucial to remember our responsibility towards the environment. This year, let’s pledge to celebrate an eco-friendly Holi. Here are 10 tips to help you make your Holi celebrations greener and safer.

1. Use Natural Colors

The first step towards an eco-friendly Holi is to use natural colors. Synthetic colors often contain harmful chemicals that can cause skin allergies and environmental pollution. Opt for organic colors or make your own at home using ingredients like turmeric, beetroot, and spinach. Using natural colors for Holi is a great way to celebrate the festival in an eco-friendly manner.

Here are some ways to make natural colors at home:

  1. Yellow: Mix gram flour and turmeric in a 1:2 ratio. Rub the mixture between your palms for even blending. Sieve the mixture multiple times for a fine texture.
  2. Red: Boil beetroot in water until it releases its vibrant color. Strain the liquid and allow it to cool. Mix the beetroot-infused water with cornstarch or flour to create a natural and safe red color.
  3. Orange: Soak a few strands of saffron in warm water until the water takes on a vibrant orange color. Use this as a liquid color or mix this saffron-infused water with cornstarch or flour to create a natural and fragrant orange color.
  4. Blue: Blend fresh or frozen blueberries with water to create a deep blue liquid. Strain the mixture and mix it with cornstarch or flour to create a natural and safe blue color.
  5. Pink: Dry hibiscus flowers till they are crisp. Then grind them to a fine powder consistency.

2. Save Water

Holi is often associated with water fights, but it’s important to remember that water is a precious resource. Try to celebrate a dry Holi or limit the use of water as much as possible. Conserving water during Holi is a great way to celebrate the festival responsibly.

Here are some tips on how to save water during Holi:

  1. Play with Dry Colors: Opt for dry colors instead of water-based ones. This not only saves water but also makes it easier to clean up after the festivities.
  2. Avoid Water Guns and Balloons: Traditional water guns and balloons can lead to a lot of water wastage. Consider using flowers or eco-friendly confetti instead.
  3. Limit Water Usage: Decide on a specific amount of water you’ll use for the celebrations and stick to it.
  4. Celebrate a Dry Holi: A dry Holi involves playing with dry, organic colors and avoiding water altogether.
  5. Encourage Water-Free Games: Promote games and activities that don’t involve water. This can make the celebration more creative and fun, and also save water.

3. Eco-Friendly Decorations

Use eco-friendly decorations made from recycled or biodegradable materials. Avoid plastic balloons and decorations that can harm the environment. Celebrating Holi in an eco-friendly way is a wonderful idea.

Here are some suggestions for eco-friendly decorations for Holi 2024:

  1. Natural Colors: Opt for organic and natural colors made from flowers, turmeric, or other plant-based sources to avoid harmful chemicals that can harm the environment and your skin.
  2. DIY Colors: Create your own eco-friendly colors at home using ingredients like beetroot, spinach, or henna, adding a personal touch to your celebrations while reducing environmental impact.
  3. Biodegradable Decor: Choose decorations made from biodegradable materials like paper, flowers, or natural fabrics to minimize waste and promote sustainability.
  4. Floral Decorations: Use flowers as natural decorative elements in your home, for example, roses, dahlias, zinnias, marigolds, and jasmine.
  5. Eco-Friendly Pooja Items: A non-toxic and nature-friendly decoration can be done with wooden thalis, Vedic dhoop battis, incense sticks, and many more items during your Holi celebrations.

4. Sustainable Gifts

If you’re planning to exchange gifts this Holi, choose sustainable options. Consider gifts like potted plants, organic beauty products, or homemade sweets. Giving sustainable gifts is a great way to celebrate Holi in an eco-friendly manner.

Here are some ideas for sustainable gifts for Holi 2024:

  1. Organic Holi Colors: Gift organic colors made from flowers and vegetable stains. They are safe, easy to remove, and free from allergies and skin reactions.
  2. Dry Holi Kit: Encourage water conservation by gifting a Dry Holi kit. This could include organic colors and biodegradable balloons.
  3. Sustainable Sunglasses: Protect your loved ones’ eyes from the Holi colors with a pair of sustainable sunglasses.
  4. Traditional Sweets & Snacks: Include traditional sweets and snacks in your gift hamper. Opt for homemade or locally sourced items to support local businesses.
  5. Decor Objects: Add a unique charm to Holi festivities with striking decor accents. You can discover colorful flower wall decor, gracefully dangling sustainable wall hangings, devotional accents, engraved wooden tealight holders, and artisanal handicrafts.
  6. Sustainable Clothing: Consider gifting organic ethnic wear like kurtas and kurta sets. These will not only protect the skin but also add to the festive look.

5. Avoid Plastic

Plastic water guns, balloons, and containers are commonly used during Holi. However, these items are not biodegradable and can harm the environment. Opt for alternatives made from eco-friendly materials.

Here are some tips to avoid plastic during Holi 2024:

  1. Avoid Plastic Balloons: Instead of using plastic water balloons, you can play special games and develop interesting ideas playing Hide & Seek with a Holi twist.
  2. Eco-Friendly Alternatives for Plastic Holi Decorations: Often Holi snacks are wrapped in plastic to give to others. We can use banana leaves or palm leaves as an eco-friendly alternative.
  3. Avoid Plastic Pichkaris: Pichkaris are made entirely of plastic. This Holi, instead of using these typical accessories that waste a lot of water and produce needless trash, we should choose eco-friendly alternatives.

6. Safe Disposal

After the celebrations, ensure that all waste is disposed of properly. Do not litter your surroundings.

Here are some tips for safe disposal after Holi 2024:

  1. Collect and Segregate the Waste: Make sure to collect all the waste generated during Holi, including the leftover color and other materials. Segregate them based on their composition, i.e., organic and inorganic.
  2. Compost the Biodegradable Ones: Compost the biodegradable waste. This will not only reduce the amount of waste but also provide you with nutrient-rich compost for your plants.
  3. Recycle or Reuse the Remaining Waste: Give the remaining waste to your local waste management center for recycling or reusing.
  4. Avoid Littering: Dispose of empty color packets and water balloons responsibly. Avoid littering and keep the environment clean.
  5. Reuse Water: If the water released is chemical-free, reuse it in your garden or down the flush.

7. Protect Animals

Animals can get distressed by the noise and colors during Holi. Keep your pets indoors and do not apply color to them.

Here are some tips to protect animals during Holi 2024:

  1. Avoid Using Harmful Colours: Opt for pet-safe colours or natural alternatives like turmeric or beetroot powder instead of chemical-laden colours that can be toxic to pets if ingested or inhaled.
  2. Keep Pets Indoors: Keep your pets indoors in a quiet and secure room during the festivities.
  3. Avoid Feeding Pets Holi Treats: Refrain from feeding your pet sweet or fried treats, opting for healthy alternatives instead.
  4. Monitor Your Pet’s Behaviour: Monitor your pet’s behaviour closely for any signs of distress or discomfort, and seek veterinary assistance if needed.
  5. Discourage Unruly Play: It is the responsibility of every citizen to discourage unruly play that can traumatise animals.
  6. Wash Off Colours: If your pet or community dog does become dyed with Holi colours, gently wash them with a mild dog/pet shampoo.

8. Organic Food

Consider preparing organic and homemade food for Holi. This not only ensures the quality of the food but also reduces the carbon footprint.

Here are some organic food options you can consider for Holi 2024:

  1. Thandai: A traditional Indian cold drink prepared with a mixture of almonds, fennel seeds, watermelon kernels, rose petals, pepper, vetiver seeds, cardamom, saffron, milk and sugar.
  2. Gujiya: A sweet deep-fried dumpling, filled with a mixture of sweetened khoya and dried fruits.
  3. Ragi Malpua: A healthier version of the traditional malpua, made with ragi flour.
  4. Jhalmuri Posto Cookies with Avocado Pachadi: A unique fusion dish that combines the flavors of jhalmuri (a popular street food made with puffed rice) and posto (poppy seeds), served with a side of avocado pachadi.
  5. Dahi Bhalla: Creamy lentil dumplings soaked in yogurt, bursting with tangy spices.
  6. Samosa: Crispy pastry filled with spiced potatoes.
  7. Papdi Chaat: Crunchy wheat crisps layered with spicy chutneys, yogurt, and potatoes.
  8. Pakoda: Crispy fritters made with chickpea flour and assorted veggies, spiced to perfection.

9. Community Celebrations

Celebrating Holi as a community can help reduce the overall environmental impact. It promotes the sharing of resources and reduces waste. Holi, the festival of colors, is celebrated with great enthusiasm and joy across India.

Here are some community celebrations for Holi 2024:

  1. Organize a public Holi celebration with music, dance, and of course, colors! This is a great way to bring people together and create a lasting memory.
  2. Host a color-throwing competition. This is a fun activity for people of all ages. Just be sure to use safe, natural colors.
  3. Have a traditional Holika Dahan bonfire. This bonfire signifies the burning of evil and the triumph of good over evil.
  4. Organize a food festival. Holi is a time to indulge in delicious treats. Serve traditional Holi foods like gujiya, thandai, and dahi vada.
  5. Hold a charity event. Holi is a time for giving. Organize a charity event to raise money for a worthy cause.

10. Spread Awareness

Lastly, spread awareness about the importance of celebrating an eco-friendly Holi. Encourage your friends and family to adopt sustainable practices. Holi, the festival of colors, is a time of joy and celebration. However, it’s also an opportunity to spread awareness about various issues.

Here are some awareness campaigns related to Holi 2024:

  1. Crocs India: Crocs India’s vibrant Holi campaign celebrates individuality and communal joy, featuring Vedang Raina and Rasha Thadani. It showcases Crocs’ Classic Clog and Jibbitz™ charms as the perfect canvas for festive expression.
  2. Haldiram: Haldiram’s ‘Khulke Khilao Holi’ campaign encourages embracing the joy of the festival, with a heartwarming story of sharing Thandai, Gujiya, and snacks during colorful festivities.
  3. Shisen Fox: Shisen Fox’s ‘Holi Kab Hai?’ digital campaign, in collaboration with Glad U Came, emphasizes caution during Holi celebrations due to harmful colors, promoting eye safety with colorful sunglasses.
  4. Goldmedal Electricals: Goldmedal Electricals promotes a responsible approach to Holi, highlighting the issue of water wastage and urging people to reconsider their festival practices.

Conclusion

Celebrating an eco-friendly Holi is not just about protecting the environment. It’s about embracing a lifestyle that respects and cherishes the world we live in. So this Holi, let’s color our lives with not just vibrant hues but also the shades of sustainability and responsibility. Happy Eco-Friendly Holi 2024!
