Holika Dahan 2024: The Ceremonial Bonfire

Holika Dahan involves the lighting of a ceremonial bonfire after sunset during the auspicious Pradosh Kaal while the Purnimasi Tithi prevails. Here are some essential guidelines associated with this sacred event:

1. Pradosh Preference

  • The ideal Holika Dahan Muhurta occurs during Pradosh, coinciding with the end of Bhadra.
  • If Bhadra concludes before midnight during Pradosh, Holika Dahan should proceed after Bhadra.

2. Bhadra Timing

  • Bhadra, which occurs during the first half of Purnimasi Tithi, signifies a period when all auspicious activities should be avoided.
  • If Bhadra persists after midnight, Holika Dahan should be conducted within Bhadra, preferably during Bhadra Punchha, while avoiding Bhadra Mukha due to its association with bad luck.

However, his son Prahlad remained devoted to Lord Vishnu, much to the king’s disdain. Hiranyakashipu’s sister, Holika, was bestowed with the power to withstand fire. In an attempt to kill Prahlad, the demon king ordered Holika to sit on a pyre with Prahlad on her lap. But to everyone’s astonishment, Prahlad emerged unscathed from the flames, while Holika, despite her supposed immunity, perished in the fire.
