JHARSUGUDA (India CSR) – Villagers from Banjari and its surrounding areas have intensified their protest against Vedanta Aluminium Ltd (VAL) at the company’s Jharsuguda plant. The demonstrators, rallying at Gate-2, are pressing for job opportunities for locals and restoration of infrastructure, adversely affected by the plant’s operations.
The Protest and Its Demands
On Monday, residents gathered for over three hours at VAL’s Gate-2, voicing their frustration over a lack of employment opportunities and the negative impact of the plant’s operations on local infrastructure. Amit Oram, a representative of municipal ward number 15, highlighted the long-standing issues of unfulfilled promises by Vedanta, spanning two decades. These promises included the provision of basic amenities like water, roads, and electricity, alongside effective pollution control measures.
Sit-In Strike and Official Response
Following a week-long sit-in strike, the villagers have demanded a written assurance from Vedanta’s management, stipulating a one-week deadline for this commitment. Their appeal, submitted to the district collector, seeks immediate intervention in this escalating situation. The district authorities have responded, promising to address these concerns within a 15-day period.
Vedanta’s Stance
In response to the growing unrest, the Head of PR and Communications of the company has committed to organizing a grievance meeting before November 25. The meeting aims to address the issues raised by the villagers and explore development opportunities for the Banjari community, indicating the company’s willingness to engage in dialogue and find a resolution.
