New Delhi: In a bid to mitigate India’s mounting agri-water crisis, DCM Shriram Foundation, the charitable subsidiary of DCM Shriram Ltd, collaboratively with The/Nudge Institute, has unveiled the 16 semi-finalists of their DCM Shriram AgWater Challenge.
Addressing India’s Water Woes
India’s agriculture sector consumes an overwhelming 78% of the nation’s freshwater, primarily from dwindling groundwater sources. This has led to an alarming decline in groundwater tables by 2-3 meters annually. Projected estimates suggest that by 2030, India will grapple with just half of its required water resources. The DCM Shriram AgWater Challenge is a beacon of hope, aiming to catalyze AgTech and Social Impact Entrepreneurs. The goal is clear: create innovative solutions for water-heavy crops like rice, wheat, sugarcane, and cotton. These crops are not just agricultural mainstays but also the lifelines for smallholder farmers combating increasing water scarcity and climate adversities.
Spotlight on Innovations
Out of the 16 semi-finalist AgWater Tech Innovators:
- Five are pioneering data-centric and smart irrigation systems.
- Some are championing IoT-backed hardware.
- Others emphasize Geo-AI platforms tailored for specific farm water management or efficient water utilization through moisture measurement devices.
- Advanced imaging for water management and affordable, customized irrigation systems through an Irrigation-as-a-Service model are also in the mix. Each innovation bears the potential to revolutionize the agri-water ecosystem, aiming to optimize profitability for smallholder farmers.

The Road Ahead
For the ensuing 10 months, each of the 16 contenders will run pilot tests of their projects across various locales to assess scalability and impact.
The Selection Journey
The three-tiered selection involved:
- Evaluating solutions based on relevance – 78 of 134 applicants progressed.
- Assessing multiple aspects like product compatibility, potential impact, tech readiness, and scalability.
- A deep-dive into the strategic approach of the top 26, scrutinizing their water efficiency measures for targeted crops and the affordability factor for farmers. This culminated in the cream of the crop – the top 16 semi-finalists. The esteemed selection panel comprised of 18 luminaries from notable AgWater affiliates, advisors, and industry mavens.
