A collaborative initiative with Jayadeva Hospital, Manipal Hospitals, and Fortis Hospitals aims to bring essential cardiac care to children from low-income families, tackling congenital heart defects (CHD) and promoting inclusive healthcare.
Philips India and Rotary Bangalore Indiranagar have recently announced a ground-breaking partnership to offer free medical assistance, surgeries, and post-surgical care to 300 underprivileged children, aged between 2 and 12, by the end of 2023. With backing from Bangalore’s notable hospitals – Jayadeva Hospital, Manipal Hospitals, and Fortis Hospitals – this ambitious initiative is set to address the urgent need for quality healthcare and increased access to vital cardiac care services for children hailing from low-income families.
Fighting Congenital Heart Defects in India
In India, it’s estimated that over 200,000 children are born with CHDs each year. Of these, more than 70,000 are diagnosed with critical CHD, necessitating specialist medical intervention even before their first birthday. This genetic heart muscle issue can lead to sudden death or progressive heart failure. Regrettably, awareness about genetic cardiomyopathy is minimal among the underprivileged, and early symptoms are often understated, mistaken for typical newborn conditions such as infections or adaptation difficulties to life outside the womb.
Bridging the Urban-Rural Healthcare Divide
Predominantly, pediatric cardiac expertise is concentrated in urban centers, leaving rural pediatricians struggling to diagnose a sick baby with CHD, frequently considering alternative diagnoses. This diagnostic delay results in valuable time lost, during which the baby’s condition may worsen or even result in fatality.
Towards a Future of Inclusive Healthcare
This partnership between Philips India and Rotary Bangalore Indiranagar manifests their shared commitment towards addressing humanitarian needs and promoting wellbeing. It aligns perfectly with Philips’ purpose that everyone deserves access to quality healthcare. This initiative is not just a response to an immediate crisis; it is a precedent-setting endeavor towards inclusive healthcare, aimed at transforming the overall wellbeing of underprivileged children in India. By uniting the power of technology, expertise, and compassion, this initiative is a beacon of hope for the future of healthcare.
