Redington Foundation, as part of its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiative, has made significant strides in promoting sustainable development in two Tamil Nadu villages. Their work includes installing 67 biogas plants in Kuruthanamedu village and renovating a pond in Thandalacherri village, both located near the warehouse operations of ProConnect Supply Chain Solutions. The projects aim to boost renewable energy sources, improve water availability and recharge groundwater levels.

Fueling Sustainability with Biogas

As part of the initiative, the biogas plants installed by the Redington Foundation will enable villagers to convert organic waste into biogas for cooking and lighting. This will not only reduce their reliance on firewood and kerosene, thereby curtailing air pollution and deforestation, but also generate organic manure to enhance soil fertility and crop yield.

Revitalizing Water Resources

The pond renovation in Thandalacherri village will ensure year-round water supply for approximately 1,000 households, aiding in domestic consumption, livestock rearing, and agriculture. In addition to removing the water-depleting weed Juliflora, the pond has been planted with native trees and fenced with a channel to prevent water loss and contamination.

Nurturing Hygiene and Digital Literacy

Besides the biogas plants and pond renovation, Redington Foundation provides additional assistance via a multi-sector development initiative. This includes four battery-operated vehicles (BoVs) for waste collection and segregation, sanitary napkin incinerators in middle schools for safe disposal, and a computer with accessories for the Panpakkam library to foster digital literacy and employment skills among rural students and youth.

Caring for Mothers and Children

Furthermore, Redington Foundation is providing resources to three Integrated Child Development Services (ICDS) centres in Panpakkam, Kuruthanamedu and Thandalacherri villages, enhancing facilities for mother and child health, nutrition, preschool education, and immunization.

Reaching a Larger Community

The project is set to impact around 6,240 individuals from six villages in the Gummidipoondi block of Thiruvallur district, aiming to foster awareness and volunteerism among community members about various facets of sustainable development such as environment, health, education, and livelihood.

Ramesh Natarajan, CEO of Redington Limited, emphasized their commitment to effecting positive change at the grassroots level. “Our project in the villages of Thandalacherri and Kuruthanamedu is a conscious step towards achieving this goal, and we are hopeful that our efforts will enable the people with better accessibility to renewable energy, clean water, digital literacy, and personal hygiene”, he said. Redington Foundation’s mission to promote sustainable development aligns seamlessly with its larger corporate ethos, encouraging education, health, skill development
