The Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) efforts of the company have resulted in the construction of 10 check dams across 7 villages, providing benefits to nearly 20,000 people.

Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiatives in India often involve the construction of check dams, particularly in areas facing water scarcity. Recently, as part of its ongoing Water Resource Management (WRM) under CSR initiative, APM Terminals Pipavav has built two new check dams in Kumbhariya village. The dams, with a storage capacity of 0.08 MCFT, will be providing drinking water and irrigation to a population of approximately 1,200. Kumbhariya is a small town located in the Amreli district of Gujarat, India. It is situated about 35 kilometers east of APM Terminals Pipavav, which is located on the west coast of the state.

The distance between Kumbhariya and APM Terminals Pipavav is approximately 70 kilometers by road, and the driving time is typically around 1 hour and 30 minutes, depending on traffic conditions.

Water scarcity

Gujarat is a water-scarce state, with limited freshwater resources and high demand for water for agricultural, industrial, and domestic purposes. Many areas, including Kumbhariya, face shortages of water for drinking, including irrigation, and other needs, particularly during the dry season. The major issues faced by this region is Groundwater depletion. Water pollution and water scarcity are also key issues. This is the reason APM Terminals Pipavav work on such fronts to help the communities living in this region. This will be the second and third dam built by APM terminals Pipavav in Kumbhariya  Gujarat, for the betterment of community and environment.

Commitment to community development

This is the third check dam that APM Terminals Pipavav has built in Kumbhariya village and the 12th overall as part of its commitment to community development. The company has also undertaken other WRM initiatives such as lift irrigation systems, protection walls, protection bunds, roof rainwater harvesting structures, farm ponds, well recharging systems, sanitation units, and bathrooms.

Improving water availability for sustainable agriculture

APM Terminals Pipavav’s latest check dams will help improve water availability and support sustainable agriculture in the area. The company has been contributing to community development for over a decade with multiple initiatives and has created livelihood opportunities for the villagers.

Creating a better future through CSR

APM Terminals Pipavav is dedicated to promoting sustainable development and social responsibility in the communities where it operates. The company’s latest WRM initiatives are a testament to its commitment to creating a better future for all.

Supporting thousands of households

APM Terminals Pipavav’s WRM initiatives are supporting over thousands of households in the region. By building check dams, lift irrigation systems, protection walls, and other structures, the company is helping to improve access to water and supporting sustainable agriculture, which is crucial for the region’s economic growth.

Water: Foundation of Sustainable Agriculture

Water is a critical resource for sustainable agriculture. It is essential and foundation resource for crop growth and productivity. Sustainable agriculture practices that prioritize water conservation and management are critical for ensuring long-term food security and supporting rural livelihoods. It is very much helpful particularly in regions where water resources are limited. Efficient water use and management practices, such as drip irrigation, rainwater harvesting, and mulching, can help to reduce water wastage and conserve water resources. It is important to ensure an adequate supply of water for irrigation also to manage its quality, quantity, and timing to maximize crop yields while minimizing environmental impact.

Building of Check Dams under CSR

Check dams are frequently built as part of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiatives in India, particularly in water-scarce areas. These dams, built by manufacturing and infrastructure firms, contribute to sustainable water management and community development by improving water accessibility, promoting agriculture, and conserving resources. Such projects have a positive impact on the environment and people’s lives.

Check Dams: Boon for Water-Scarce Regions

Check dams are small structures built across rivers or streams to slow down the flow of water and allow it to percolate into the ground. They are designed to control erosion and prevent downstream flooding, as well as to recharge groundwater and support agricultural activities. In areas with limited water resources, check dams can be an effective means of conserving water and improving access to it for local communities.
