From Maharashtra to Assam: A Closer Look at India’s Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) Spending

The Union Minister of State's disclosure of CSR spending statistics shows the importance of both PSUs and non-PSUs in the field of corporate social responsibility (CSR).

The minister provided information in response, according to which the total amount of CSR funds spent by PSUs and non-PSUs from Financial Years (FY) 2016–17 to 2020–21 was Rs. 1,02,359.

Rao Inderjit Singh, the Union Minister of State for the Ministry of Statistics and Program Implementation, recently provided the Rajya Sabha with information regarding the total amount spent by PSUs and private sector organisations on Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) over the previous five years. In his written response, Singh stated that during the fiscal years 2016–17 to 2020–21, a total of Rs 1,02,359.14 crore was spent on CSR.

CSR Expenditure by PSUs and Non-PSUs

The minister’s response further disclosed how PSUs and non-PSUs split the total amount spent on CSR over the time period. PSUs spent Rs. 20,959.94 crore on CSR, compared to Rs. 81,399.20 crore spent by non-PSUs. The significance of CSR for businesses in the public and commercial sectors is highlighted by this statistics.

Expenditure on CSR by state and UT

The MoS also released information on CSR spending by State/UT over the previous five years in addition to overall spending statistics. According to the data, Maharashtra is at the top of the list with spending of Rs 15,135.12 crore. Karnataka, Gujarat, and Tamil Nadu are three additional states that spent a large amount on CSR throughout the time period.

Expenditure on CSR in the Northeastern States

Assam led the list with a spending of Rs 1,131.03 crore, according to the report, even though the aggregate CSR spending in the eight North-eastern states was somewhat lower than that in other regions. Other states with good CSR spending included Arunachal Pradesh, Meghalaya, and Manipur.

Since corporate social responsibility (CSR) has grown to be an essential component of business ethics, this data shows how both PSUs and non-PSU businesses are dedicated to promoting social welfare. CSR programmes allow businesses the chance to give back to society and contribute to the creation of a better future. CSR also helps businesses improve their brand, grow consumer loyalty, and draw in new hires.
