NEW DELHI: Jubilant Bhartia Foundation and Schwab Foundation for Social Entrepreneurship are pleased to announce the ‘Social Entrepreneur of the Year’ Award for 2012 for India. Applicants are invited to participate and share their innovation. The deadline for receiving first round applications is May 31, 2012. Finalists will then be selected following an intensive search and selection process, including expert reviews and site visits. The winner will be announced at a ceremony coinciding with the India Economic Summit in November 2012 in New Delhi.
Social Entrepreneurs are innovators who implement practical and sustainable solutions to address challenges in numerous areas including health, education, environment, job creation and access to technology. Whether they are set up as for-profit entities, hybrid social ventures or not-for-profit organizations, their primary focus is transformational social change. Social entrepreneurs develop a revenue stream through the sale of products, services, fees or develop key partnerships to achieve sustainability.
Jubilant Bhartia Foundation joined hands with the Schwab Foundation starting in year 2010 for the Social Entrepreneur of the Year (SEOY) Award in India. Last year, Ms Neelam Chhiber from Industree Crafts Pvt Ltd. – Industree Crafts Foundation (Mother Earth) was awarded the Social Entrepreneur of the Year 2011 by Mr. Prithvi Raj Chavan, Chief Minister of Maharashtra and Mr. Ashwani Kumar, Minister of State for Planning, Science, Technology and Earth Sciences of India.
“The SEOY 2011 award is extremely significant for recognition of India’s artisanal sector that has for too long languished in no man’s land. The spotlight has been put on one of India’s largest asset bases, a highly skilled and talented mass of more than 40 million people, scattered across 6 lakh villages with no common voice. This is India’s traditional livelihoods space, its non-farm sector, the second largest rural income provider, a sustainable and inclusive production base for the globe.” said Neelam Chibber, Industree Crafts Pvt Ltd. – Industree Crafts Foundation (Mother Earth).
Neelam further added, “Full credit goes to Jubilant Bhartia Foundation for uniting with the Schwab Foundation to provide the Social Enterprise sector high profile exposure with policy makers, media and hence the common man, about building innovative ways of releasing the tremendous social and entreprenial energy that India has, which when combined will take us to the second half of this century.”
The Jubilant Bhartia Foundation collaborates with the Schwab Foundation to provide unparalleled platforms at the national level for leading social innovators that highlight social entrepreneurship as a key element for inclusive growth. The finalists chosen are amongst those tenaciously developing solutions in key growth areas. The Jubilant Bhartia Foundation aims to collaborate meaningfully with them by supporting them with linkages and networks to increase their impact and scale.
Schwab Foundation for Social Entrepreneurship is a sister organization of the World Economic Forum. The Foundation provides unique regional and global platforms to promote social entrepreneurship as a key element to advancing societies and addressing social problems innovatively and effectively. It also fosters a close-knit community of social entrepreneurs for idea exchange and replication of best practices.
Jubilant Bhartia Foundation established in 2007, is the not for profit organization of the Jubilant Bhartia Group. It focuses on conceptualizing and implementing the Corporate Social Responsibility initiatives for the Group. The Jubilant Bhartia Foundation’s activities include various community development work, health care programs, cultural and sports events, an environment preservation initiative, vocational training, women empowerment and educational activities.
Start Up! will manage the outreach, due diligence and jury presentation of the awards on behalf of the Jubilant Bhartia Foundation.
All Finalists will be invited to the India Economic Summit in November 2012 in New Delhi.
The winner joins the global community of Schwab Foundation social entrepreneurs, and will participate in the annual and regional meetings of the World Economic Forum, which provides unprecedented opportunities to engage with global decision makers from the public, corporate, media and academic sectors.
