RAIGARH (CHATTISGARH): Nearly 4,000 families across 14 villages in Raigarh district are set to receive multi-crore compensation under Maharashtra State Power Generation Company Ltd’s (Mahagenco) ambitious Gare Palma Sector-II (GP-II) coal mining project.
As part of the plan, landowners will be compensated at Rs 35 lakh per acre, while a Rs 2,435 crore resettlement and rehabilitation package has been announced. The project involves acquisition of about 2,000 hectares of private land.
Mahagenco said the mine will produce 23.6 million tonnes of coal annually, supplying its thermal power stations at Chandrapur (1,000 MW), Koradi (1,980 MW) and Parli (250 MW), contributing over 3,200 MW to the national grid.
The project is expected to generate 3,400 direct jobs and thousands of indirect employment opportunities. The company has earmarked an investment of Rs 7,500 crore and estimates a contribution of nearly ₹30,000 crore in royalties, GST and other levies to state and central governments over the mine’s lifetime.
To offset ecological impact, Mahagenco has committed to plant more than 5.6 million native saplings over 2,256 hectares in the next 32 years.
The company claimed that local residents have welcomed the initiative. Delegations from several villages recently met district officials demanding early start of the acquisition process. Many families have also begun planning new housing and small businesses in anticipation of the payout.
