Some so many tourists who come to India and visit New Delhi not just to have a glance at the Taj Mahal, but also to visit the India gate. It holds so much history and myths that tourists to date want to have a view of it at least once when they are here. Be it any rally, or dedication for the great personality, it is always India gate which is said to be the place of honor. It is one of the major attractions in New Delhi. New Delhi is a city popularly known as the national capital of India. India Gate is not just a popular tourist monument but also holds some interesting facts that you might want to know.

1. The Real Purpose

India gate has been marked prominently as the top-notch landmark of Delhi in the early 20th century. It is located on the Rajpath which is an aid to be situated in the heart of New Delhi. This monument was built ideally to commemorate those brave soldiers who were part of the British Indian Army but unfortunately had lost their lives when they were fighting in the Afgan and World War 1 wars.

2. The Real Name

Most people are in the misconception that the India gate is the real name of this monument. But the fact is it was changed in the site of the Indian Army’s tomb soon after the country’s independence. Otherwise, previously it was named the India war memorial. This monument is not just a commemoration but also a site that is popular for the Amar Jawan Jyoti.

3. Construction

As you can have a look at India gates amole of pictures you won’t be surprised to know that it has the construction matching to the British empress design of the colony they had when they were ruling in India. But the cat is this gate was designed considering the concept of Paris Arc De Triomphe in mind. It is not the shortest one but comes 42 meters high. It was Sir Edwin Lutyens who laid its core foundation who was also a popular architect in Delhi. This gate was made with the place sandstones and needless to say it is still standing strong and intact.

4. Another Statue

India gate also had another statue of the personality called Great George V. basically when India was under the ruling of the British empire, Great George V was the emperor during that time. It has been installed with the India Gate premises. But soon after the independence and the controversies related to the site, this statue was removed and then installed in the Coronation park along with some other statues.

5. The 24×7 Flame

The flame called Amar Jawan Jyoti is said to be alighting all the time in this gate. When you plan to visit here, you can surely have a look at it. It is said to be in the memory of the 1971 martyrs who fight in the Indo-Pak war. It is also called to be the shrine wherein the arrangement is made on a cenotaph with the black color of the marbles. You will also see a rifle placed on it.

6. The Time Needed

It is said that building such a type of monument was never an easy job. Just like the Taj Mahal holds importance and a sign of love India gate is said to be the Martyrs memorial which took quite a long time to build. Nearly 10 years were taken to complete the construction. It was the Duke of Connaught who laid the foundation on February 10th, 1921.

7. It Is Not Just The Wall

India Gate is an amazing monument but it is not just made of black marble. Rather there are a lot many things related to it. If you have a closer look, you will find the name inscribed on the walls. There are nearly 13,218 servicemen names that also include the officers and also the soldiers from the United Kingdom.

8. A Patriotic Attraction

Surely you may see many people enjoying a picnic on the weekend here. But that is not it. This place is a patriotic attraction. Some so many people who come to India to have look at India Gate. It has incredible surroundings of lush green lawns where most people have a great time at night and even day to have some good moments with friends and families.

9. Known For Special Events

There are so many events like 26th January and even the 15th August Parade which is organized here. Besides some of the guests from the State, and even the prime minister a president often visit India gate for paying tribute and respect to Amar Jawan Jyoti on some of the State ceremonies events.

10. India Engagement

If you have a look in a better way, you will realize that there is INDIA engraved on both sides. There are also the dates on the right and left sides of the word India which has MCMXIX (1919) and MCMXIV (1914)

Surely these are so many interesting facts that must have amazed you about India gate and if these things have fascinated you then it is time to pack your bags and get the camera and catch some incredible moments of this monument. You need to get down at Barakhamba Road Metro Station of Delhi. It is on the blue lining which is nearly 3 km far from the India gate. From the metro station, you can take a taxi or even an auto at great pricing. If you get down at Rajiv Chowk metro station you can surely reach India gate in less period.
